Del Taco Training Helps New Franchisees Build Sustainable Success

Del Taco serves fresh food fast and wants every guest to leave happy. There’s a method that leads to getting these results and the brand’s training is a key part of it. The brand’s operational support structure provides superior training to its franchise operators and their employees.

“That begins with understanding everything our team members do to meet and exceed expectations, from prepping fresh ingredients all the way through to serving those ingredients in consistently delicious tacos, burritos, burgers, and fries with a genuine smile,” says Susan Powell, Del Taco’s Director, Training & Development. She says under the brand’s system all franchisees have the opportunity to learn standard practices and the management aspects of the business in real time. That includes everything from “the why behind the what” of their standards to inventory, reporting, scheduling, and communication.

To carry out this task, Del Taco’s training uses a blended learning approach, says Powell, with approximately 10% of the time completed through their eLearning platform, 75% of the time shoulder-to-shoulder training, coaching, and teachbacks, and about 15% in classroom/interactive workshops.  All told, franchisees will experience five weeks of in-restaurant training, and a week of classroom facilitation focusing on the real-world application of running a successful restaurant. There are also separate tracks for their shift managers and employees.

And it’s not just superior training that helps Del Taco franchisees run a successful restaurant. It’s unique advantages in their training systems and processes, like a Standard Operating Procedures Manual that is fully contained within the training platform in electronic format, allowing for real-time updates and absolute consistency in all brand standards.

Then there’s what can’t be measured, says Powell. “Only the very best of our very talented General Managers are Certified Training Managers, and they are extremely passionate about the Del Taco brand.  Most go on to continue to be a resource for each person they train for years to come because they want our franchisees to succeed and they take that very personally.”

After a franchisee comes on board for initial training and is up and running, they can expect continuing education as needed. Franchisees will receive training and support for all promotions (typically 9 – 10 /per year) and system-rollouts.  Whenever a new product, process, or system is launched, franchisees can expect the in-restaurant support and training they need to execute flawlessly.

Del Taco’s training leads to strong teams, brand consistency, and the knowledge, skills, and tools to drive profitable sales and transactions.

“We are extremely focused on ensuring that each trainee understands the whole business – which sets us all up for sustainable success, including in new markets,” says Powell.
