Multi-Unit Franchisee Insight - Passion & Work-Life Balance

We talk to successful multi-unit operators constantly here at Franchise Update Media. These busy on-the-go people share great insight and wisdom with us through our profile stories in Multi-Unit Franchisee magazine. Here, from our archives, are some insightful responses from some of these franchisees.

What is it about your business that creates passion in you?
Operations and achieving positive results or, in other words, continuously improving our people and business.

In what ways do you try to balance life and work?
I try to align my time with my life priorities: faith, family, and work. While I invest a lot of time into work, I prioritize faith and family events above work when possible. I found that scheduling personal events and activities in my calendar, such as charity events, date nights, or workouts, provides a much greater chance of completing them. I also schedule travel around family time when possible. For example, I'll take the first flight out in the morning so I don't miss out on evening time with my family. This often requires waking up at about 4 a.m.
Brent Veach, multi-unit franchisee of Del Taco

What is it about your business that creates passion in you?
The customer service aspect. It allows me a moment to not focus on numbers and contracts. It allows me to be a person, and the customers appreciate you being one of them. Figuring out how to cut expenses, but keep quality service is incredibly exciting as well.

In what ways do you try to balance life and work?
My kids are my life. I work hard for them and better myself for them, so I bought a business that allows them to be with me at work.
Jason Avant, multi-unit franchisee of Launch Trampoline Park

What is it about your business that creates passion in you?
Providing a path for our people to achieve more--personally, professionally, and financially--than they ever thought possible. I love to listen to these dreams and go to work helping people achieve them.

In what ways do you try to balance life and work? It's a constant balancing act, which I am better at some times than others. I have an amazing wife who takes care of so many things for our family and me, which allows my time to be better spent when away from work. I have gotten better over the years saying, "No," and I don't waste time on meaningless tasks. A mentor once taught me that "Your calendar never lies."
Michael Kulp, multi-unit franchisee of KFC and Taco Bell
