Maui Wowi Employee Volunteers In Haiti

An employee of Maui Wowi Hawaiian spent 10 days volunteering in Haiti, with support from the company’s CEO and a week of paid time off to use doing charitable work.

Greenwood Village, Colo. (PRWEB) March 09, 2013 - “Focus on things bigger than you and we can build a better world together.” With encouragement from the CEO of Maui Wowi Hawaiian, Justin Livingston, who has worked for the coffee and smoothie franchise company for 7 years, spent 10 days in Haiti volunteering to help rebuild a church, bucket by bucket, shovel by shovel. The country, which was devastated by a massive earthquake, is still in shambles and in dire need of resources.

“The amount of help needed in Haiti is overwhelming. Piece by piece, the country is being rebuilt,” said Livingston. “This was an incredible trip and an experience that was very important to me.”

Livingston works as the Director of Global Franchise Development within the corporate offices of Maui Wowi. A year ago, the CEO Michael Haith generously offered a week paid time off to the entire office, so long as it was spent volunteering and giving back. Livingston took that opportunity, along with the support of his friends, family, and church, to join an amazing group of people for a life changing experience.

“Michael and Maui Wowi offered the staff a paid week off to do charity work; that support and focus on giving back is a rare quality in a company these days and I am very appreciative,” said Livingston.

Seeing the conditions firsthand made him realize the gravity of the situation and what it means to truly have nothing. “I thought I knew what it meant for people to have nothing but I was wrong,” said Livingston. “To see an entire country that has nothing, no food, no water, no shoes, no paved roads, no electricity, no infrastructure; it’s life changing. Even being there and roughing it ourselves, makes you feel that you are using an unfair amount of resources.”

Even with the extreme situations, Livingston said the experience was perspective changing. The relationships he made with the Haitian children, despite a language barrier, he says, were “bigger than words.” Seeing them smile, laugh, and play, even in the hardest of times, he says, was a powerful experience.

Livingston hopes more awareness is brought to the needs of the people in Haiti and that others find it in themselves to seize any opportunity to help people on a “small scale and a big scale, locally and abroad.” For more information on how to volunteer, please visit http://www.redcross.org/support/volunteer.
