Regine and Erich Sixt Adopted into the Business Saily Handelsblatt Family Company

  • Entrepreneurial Couple Honoured at Celebratory Gala in Munich
  • High-Ranking Jury Acknowledge Extraordinary Life-Work
  • Editor-in-Chief Hans-jürgen Jakobs Adds to the Praise: "The Name Sixt is Synonymous with Car Rentals"

Munich, 30 January 2014 – In acknowledgement of their valuable contribution to German industry, Regine and Erich Sixt were adopted yesterday evening into the Handelsblatt Family Company "Hall of Fame" in Munich. They were awarded this exclusive membership as part of a celebratory gala attended by 150 dignitaries from business, media and politics. The couple’s extraordinary life-work was praised by a jury chaired by Gabor Steingart, publisher of the renowned german business daily Handelsblatt, and including well-known personalities such as businesswoman Maria-Elisabeth Schaeffler, Munich professor of economics Dr. Horst Wildemann, and Stefan Heidbreder, director of the german Family Companies Foundation.

Over the past decades, Regine and Erich Sixt have succeeded in building up their company, which was founded in 1912 with a handful of vehicles, from a local Munich car rental operation into an internationally leading mobility service provider. CEO Erich Sixt has provided the strategic line as a visionary entrepreneur, making Sixt the industry’s innovation leader and initiating its successful listing on the German stock exchange in 1986.

Regine Sixt began to build up global relations with famous hotels and airlines in the 1970s. She directs international marketing, and is responsible for the overall CI of all 105 Sixt countries. As CEO and founder of the Regine Sixt children’s aid foundation "Drying Little Tears", Sixt’s official corporate social responsibility programme, Regine Sixt also works for children in need throughout the world.

Today, Sixt in not only Germany’s largest car rental company with a market share of more than 30%, it has long been a global mobility service provider as well. In recent years the Group has pushed ahead once again with its expansion abroad, launching itself successfully in the USA, the world’s biggest car rental market. There are now more than 200,000 vehicles carrying the Sixt brand around the world, operating from around 2,000 stations. The couple’s two sons Alexander Sixt and Konstantin Sixt are the fourth generation of the family to hold key leadership positions in the company.

Hans-Jürgen Jakobs, editor-in-chief of the Handelsblatt, in commending the couple, spoke of the perfect division of work between Regine and Erich Sixt, which, he says, led to inevitable success: "Sixt has come to be synonymous with car rentals."

Regine Sixt: "It is great honour indeed to be included in the pantheon of German family companies, and I am delighted about it. I would like to thank in particular my husband who has always given me the latitude to develop my ideas and objectives at his side."

Erich Sixt: "I am delighted to receive this award. It is proof that family-based companies can enjoy long-term success, also when they are listed on the stock exchange. One thing is clear to me: without the tireless efforts of my wife, Sixt would not be where it is today. Businesspeople may never rest on their laurels, they must always tackle new summits – that is what we do at Sixt."

The German newspaper Handelsblatt, together with auditors KPMG, has been recognising outstanding personalities from family businesses and small and medium size companies in its "Hall of Fame" since 2009. This award honours those who have shown special service to Germany as a location. Their work has been exemplary and leading for their companies and for society in general. Award-winners include such significant personalities as Prof. Dr. Berthold Leibinger, Friedrich von Metzler, Dr. Markus Miele and Helga and Erivan Haub.

Regine and Erich Sixt have received numerous prizes over the years in recognition of their activities. In 2011, the state of Bavaria awarded them the Bavarian Order of Merit. In 2010 Erich Sixt was adopted into German advertising’s Hall of Fame. Also in 2010 the Jewish aid organisation Hadassah International declared Regine Sixt a ‘Citizen of World’. The businesswoman gained two significant awards last year. In October the German Foundation for Integration, an initiative of the German Association of Newspaper Publishers, awarded her the "Golden Victoria for Integration". The Association of German Businesswomen also designated Regine Sixt "Businesswoman of the Year 2013".
