Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Suburban Maryland & Washington DC wins National Chrysalis Award

May 08, 2014 // Franchising.com // Gaithersburg, MD  - The Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence has honored Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Suburban Maryland & Washington DC with the top national achievement in this year's category of Residential Insurance Restoration. This is the third national restoration and remodeling award won by the Paul Davis office.

According to Tom Plant, owner of Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Suburban Maryland and Washington DC, the local franchise office won the award for a recent residential fire restoration and remodeling project over $450,000. "This remodeling project was not typical," said Plant. "The home was gutted by fire and the homeowners decided to turn the devastating experience into a positive one. They contracted with our Paul Davis office to redesign, add-on, and create the residence as their dream home," he said.

Throughout the years and with more than 15 moves for the career military homeowners, there was a lengthy wish list for a future dream home. The house is located in Damascus, Md. where four adult children live in the house along with the two parents and pets. The need for a large amount of living space and an efficient use of the space was necessary and a large amount of work was completed within a five month period, and within the budget constraints dictated by the insurance company. The floor plans for all three levels were redesigned and rebuilt based on the homeowners' wish list and must-haves including customized and expanded space.

In addition to being a full-on rebuild and remodel of the home, before the actual remodel could begin, structural integrity had to be reinstituted. The fire burned so hot in the basement that the main steel beam for the house was literally bowed. After demolition, all that remained in most of the house were exterior block and brick walls. The house had to be framed systematically from inside out. The entire first floor structure was taken down to the outside walls. The second floor had to be supported while the first floor was reconstructed. The exterior was also impacted. Smoke poured out the windows during the fire, covering the brick with thick soot. Much attention was given to the cleaning, preservation, and matching of the existing brick throughout the project and ended up being one of the largest challenges. The stairs were so badly damaged by the fire that they had to be reconstructed. This brought about the need to bring them up to code by lengthening them. This required the floor plans for each level to be determined by the new stair layout and impacted the studio, foyer, powder room, bathrooms and entry points.

"Life did not stop for the homeowners while their home was being rebuilt. The couple's parents had health issues, the two eldest children had two separate car accidents, and the wife's appendix burst, all within five months," said Plant. "However, throughout the hardships, the homeowners remained very serious, even methodical about each decision and choice related to the creation of their dream home," he said. Plant added the homeowners' philosophy combined with the high level of skill brought to the table by everyone on the project resulted in a true dream home rising from the ashes of a devastating fire. The Paul Davis entry was judged on the project's overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure.

"We are extremely proud of the company's Chrysalis win. We have been honored by the remodeling organization previously and look forward to once again taking top honors with our entry," said Plant. "This is a tremendous achievement during a very competitive year with more entries than last year and a significant increase in the quality of the entries," he said. "We give credit to all of our employees who are responsible for the success of our restoration and remodeling jobs in the DC Metropolitan area."
