Taking the Leap toward Self-Sufficiency: Letting Go of Fear

The Entrepreneur's Source®, a national alternative career coaching franchise, offers New Year advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners.

January 28, 2015 // Franchising.com // Southbury, CT – Along with every New Year come new expectations for self-improvement regarding both personal life and work. While the economy and job market continue to improve and 2015 is finally here, why spend another year trying to survive the corporate grind and feeling like you are working on someone else's dream instead of your own? Terry Powell, founder of The Entrepreneur's Source®, an alternative career coaching franchise dedicated to individuals wanting to explore their options to become self-sufficient, suggests that it might be time to leave behind the fears of the unknown and finally take steps toward self-sufficiency and true work-life balance by pursuing entrepreneurship.

According to Powell, corporate America often creates a rigid and predictable atmosphere for those within and, even after years of hard work, a huge portion of Americans are still not confident in their ability to save enough to retire. Work satisfaction is low and confidence is even lower.

"Finally taking the leap toward self-sufficiency through entrepreneurship in franchising will not only offer a customizable lifestyle, but also provide you with the tools and resources to invest in your future and the future of your family," said Powell. "This huge step gives a greater sense of work satisfaction because you're in control of your venture. Franchises offer you the ability to be in business for yourself but not by yourself, while giving you the ability to have the kind of life you want."

Powell advises aspiring business owners to start by determining their desired ILWE® – Income, Lifestyle, Wealth and Equity. Meaning: what kind of income and lifestyle they would like to have in the short term and what kind of wealth and equity they would like to build in the long term. Consider what "work-life balance" means and how to use a business as a vehicle to achieve it. Going further, the following three factors should be carefully analyzed to find where the business owner should focus his or her aspirations:

  • Dangers – obstacles faced now and obstacles expected in the future
  • Opportunities – circumstances and possibilities that motivate change
  • Strengths – talents, capabilities and skills that make each individual unique and successful

According to Powell, it's incredibly important to keep an open mind and ensure fear does not take over. The most successful business owners are frequently not experts within the field in which they own a business – they are in the business of business. They have figured out that doing what you know, love and enjoy does not guarantee success and that you don't necessarily need to be in love with a product or service in order to be able to capitalize on it.

"And along the way, they have become successful and savvy business owners," added Powell. "Succumbing to fear could potentially stifle future success and lead you in the wrong direction. We have been helping individuals explore what it takes to be self-sufficient for over 30 years, and 95 percent of the business owners we've helped are in a business they admittedly never would have looked at on their own or would have prematurely dismissed."

For anyone who has entertained the idea of business ownership and is interested in exploring what options are available to them, The Entrepreneur's Source is hosting a complimentary, virtual franchise expo January 29-31, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. EST. Called Start a Business Weekend®, attendees have the opportunity to explore a variety of franchise opportunities and speak with a coach to discover if franchise entrepreneurship is the best path toward self-sufficiency. Registration is free at www.StartABusinessWeekend.com.
