Dairy Queen® System Announces Agreement to Develop the DQ® Brand in Poland as part of the European Union

Franchisee group to build DQ Grill & Chill® restaurants and DQ® Treat stores in Poland.

MINNEAPOLIS - April 01, 2015  - (BUSINESS WIRE) - The Dairy Queen® system, the international retail treat category leader and part of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A and BRK.B), announces that it will have a presence in Europe for the first time in more than 20 years.

“Poland is a country with a robust and stable economy while still having strong growth potential for international brands. In searching for a new opportunity, we were looking for a solid partner who was ready to enter the Polish market”

Sparrow 4 Sp. Z.O.O., has signed a long-term multi-unit agreement to develop DQ Grill & Chill® restaurants and DQ® Treat stores in Poland.

“This move is strategic. We are entering the Eastern European market at a time when Western brands are being embraced by a consumer base that is well informed on the importance of global brands,” said Jean Champagne, Chief Operations Officer - International Groups. “We look forward to working with a strong franchise partner in Poland. We see this as a launching pad for other contiguous countries in the region.”

The first DQ Grill & Chill and DQ Treat locations in Poland are expected to open in the spring of 2015 in the greater Warsaw metro region. DQ Grill & Chill locations will feature the DQ system’s signature GrillBurger™, chicken sandwiches and strips, other sandwiches and salads. The locations will also feature the frozen dairy soft-serve treats that have made the Dairy Queen system an icon in the industry, such as the signature Blizzard® Treat, cones with the curl on top, sundaes and other delicious offerings.

“The DQ brand is stronger than ever before, and more globally recognizable, thanks to consumer awareness through social media,” stated Champagne. “We continue to increase our presence internationally, which is a focus for us as we move into our landmark 75th anniversary year. We are thrilled to be introducing the DQ brand and heritage to Poland.”

This makes Poland the latest country outside the U.S. and Canada that will have a Dairy Queen presence. A total of 26 new locations will be developed within the first five years of the long-term franchise agreement in Poland.

“Poland is a country with a robust and stable economy while still having strong growth potential for international brands. In searching for a new opportunity, we were looking for a solid partner who was ready to enter the Polish market,” said Wojciech Siwiec, General Manager of Sparrow 4 Sp. Z.O.O. “We are excited to partner with the Dairy Queen system, whose significant experience and know-how provides a strong foundation for success. We are looking forward to a good collaboration in launching the DQ brand in Poland.”

The Dairy Queen system has more than 6,400 locations, 1,426 of which are outside the U.S. and Canada. For more information about the Dairy Queen system, visit DQ.com.
