First Bruster’s Real Ice Cream to Open in Arizona

Navy Vet and Family Bringing Chain to Phoenix Area

May 23, 2016 // Franchising.com // PITTSBURGH – Bruster’s Real Ice Cream’s latest Western expansion is taking the popular premium frozen treat chain to Arizona. New franchisees Kevin and Trinette Markey will serve the first scoops of Bruster’s ice cream in Chandler, Arizona, this summer. Bruster’s CEO Jim Sahene made the announcement while talking with reporters at the National Restaurant Show underway this week in Chicago.

Last year Bruster’s, with a cult-like following in the Eastern and Southern U.S., opened its first two West Coast shops in Southern California. It also recently expanded to South Korea.

Ice cream is a family affair in the Markey household. For years, Kevin has bonded with his now-teenage daughter, Erin, over ice cream cones. Trinette and son, Erik, who graduates this spring from Hamilton High School, will oversee the Chandler store.

The Markeys signed an agreement for one location, but they anticipate opening multiple Bruster’s in the region. They currently are scouting locations for their first shop in Chandler.

“Ice cream is what we want to do with our lives,” said Kevin Markey. “Our 401(k)s aren’t enough to live on at retirement. When we looked at the numbers with Bruster’s, the decision was easy.” The Markeys spoke with other frozen treat brands about franchising and even tried crafting their own ice cream recipes before learning about Bruster’s.

Bruster’s Ice Cream is made the old-fashioned way with slow kettle processing designed specifically to create its distinctive flavor. Bruster’s home-style mix is delivered fresh from its dairy to each store where small artisan batches are made daily by Certified Ice Cream Makers. The prestigious national Consumer Picks survey has ranked Bruster’s a top 10 limited-service restaurant five years running.

Kevin Markey previously served in the United States Navy, which entitled him to a 50 percent discount on the initial $30,000 Bruster’s franchise fee. The chain is a partner with the International Franchise Association’s VetFran program.
