Home Care Assistance Partners with Silicon Valley Robotics Company to Bring the Senior Care Industry into the 21st Century

Leading in-home care provider dubbed the “home care company with a Silicon Valley soul” has teamed up with OhmniLabs to develop robots to improve the quality of life for seniors by combating isolation; Families can sign up for the pilot program on new mobile and senior-friendly Home Care Assistance website that launched today.

October 12, 2016 // Franchising.com // San Francisco, CA – Today, Home Care Assistance, the nation’s largest provider of in-home care, announced at the Aging 2.0 OPTIMIZE conference that it has partnered with OhmniLabs, a Silicon Valley-based robotics company, on a pilot project to bring affordable and capable robots that virtually provide companionship and care for older adults in a way that no existing tool can match. Home Care Assistance’s CEO Lily Sarafan told the Optimize audience during her keynote that the new robots will help combat isolation by connecting seniors with friends and family through a two-way video chat platform that includes a mobile base and display unit. The robots can be logged into and controlled from anywhere remotely, which gives family members the ability to “check in” on their older relatives for anything from a quick chat, to a quick reminder for them to take their medication. Families can sign up for the pilot program on Home Care Assistance’s new mobile friendly website that launched today. The initial pilot is open to seniors in the Bay Area.

“Home Care Assistance has been a market leader in bringing innovation to senior care,” said Home Care Assistance CEO Lily Sarafan. “Partnering with teams like OhmniLabs’ who share our passion for technology that has a meaningful, measurable impact on the lives of older adults allows us to leverage new solutions to further our mission to change the way the world ages.”

The OhmniLabs robots are battery-powered, and can last for up to four hours before having to be recharged. And because the robots can be accessed remotely, families don’t have to wait for their older relatives to go online in order to interact with them. OhmniLabs is also developing next-generation robots with medical devices that allow for seniors to check their blood pressure, oxygen levels and other vital signs from the comfort of their own home.

“Home Care Assistance is an innovative leader in the senior care industry, and we’re very excited to kick off this partnership together,” said Thuc Vu, co-founder and CEO of OhmniLabs. “We hope seniors and their families will take advantage of this new pilot program and test out our robots as a seamless and engaging way to interact and communicate with their loved ones.”

This partnership follows announcements of Home Care Assistance’s wide array of technologies and innovative programs. Dubbed the “home care company with a Silicon Valley soul,” it has partnered with Lyft, the fastest-growing rideshare company in the country, to allow seniors to request on-demand rides with a simple phone call. Through the partnership, Home Care Assistance arranges rides and care on an as-needed basis on behalf of older adults who may not use a smartphone. More information about all of these programs and more can be found on the company’s “innovation” page on its new website.

Home Care Assistance’s Cognitive Therapeutics Method™ program was developed by brain health experts and includes administering more than 300 digital interventions to keep aging minds sharp and engaged. The company has also developed or piloted a range of solutions that complement its highly-trained caregiving services including smart home sensors and proprietary disease management tools. The combination of cutting-edge technology and and expertise in the aging space makes partnerships like this one with OhmniLabs effective in designing useful solutions for the nation’s fastest growing population.

Seniors that have tested the robots at our partner, The Heritage Pointe of Downtown Walnut Creek, the Bay Area’s premier independent senior living community have been thrilled to easily connect with their families. Many have mentioned how fun it is to take the robots for a walk while their loved ones virtually join them, meeting friends and sharing stories.
