Mathnasium and National PTA's Math Nights Engage Communities, Promote STEM Education

Richmond ‘Math Night’ illustrates engagement for national initiative

RICHMOND, VA. (PRWEB) November 19, 2018 - In an effort to inspire students’ interest in math, Mathnasium, North America’s leading math-only supplemental education franchise, is co-hosting a series of Math Nights across the U.S. Mathnasium is a founding sponsor of National PTA’s STEM + Families initiative which provides math grants to local elementary schools to help students understand math concepts and promote awareness of STEM education and careers.

Last week, over 200 Richmond students and their families attended a Math Night at Crestwood Elementary School, a Title 1 school that receives federal funding to assist in meeting student’s educational goals. The night was sponsored by local Mathnasium franchisee James Temple and featured hands-on instruction and specially developed math games that created a fun, captivating environment for families and students to learn math together.

“Math Nights are an excellent way to provide service to our community while giving students a deeper learning experience with math,” said Temple. “I’ve been involved with Mathnasium since the early pilot stages, and am constantly amazed at how we’re able to make a transformative impact on students’ lives through our program.”

Including Crestwood Elementary School, 35 local PTAs were each awarded $1,000 and will co-host a STEM + Families Math Night with a local Mathnasium center as part of the 2018 National PTA STEM + Families Math Grant, sponsored by Mathnasium. The grant recognizes these PTA’s leadership and commitment to increasing access to STEM - and particularly math - experiences for students and families.

“We know - and decades of research proves - that families play a critical role in children’s success and achievement. We also know that parents and guardians have the biggest influence on a child’s educational and career decisions,” said Jim Accomando, president of National PTA. “Family engagement is essential to strengthen STEM education, bridge the STEM gap and help all children realize their fullest potential.”

Math Night exemplifies Mathnasium and National PTA’s mission to engage, educate and connect families and students with enjoyable math experiences.

“More than half of our school attended the event, and we’re thrilled to have had this opportunity with Mathnasium and the PTA,” said Lindsay Porzio, principal of Crestwood Elementary School. “Mathnasium truly engaged with our students and families, and we’re already looking forward to our next Math Night.”
