Scooter’s Coffee Donates 100 Percent Of Day’s Sales To Help Raise Funds For Child With Rare Disease

September 24, 2019 // Franchising.com // OMAHA, Neb. - Owners of three Scooter’s Coffee locations donated 100 percent of a day’s sales to a child with a rare disease to help with medical expenses that could possibly save her life.

Tobin Grace Hansen, now 2 years old, was diagnosed at 4 months of age with a genetic progressive childhood brain disease called Canavan disease, something only around 600 people worldwide have.

Tobin’s mom, Meagan Rockwell, created a GoFundMe page explaining that Tobin’s prognosis is fatal unless she receives new groundbreaking gene and stem cell therapy replacement, which requires brain surgery. Rockwell states that the surgery won’t happen unless she and eight other families - whose children who have qualified for a trial upon FDA approval of research currently underway - raise $2,500,000 for the operation.

Stan Eilers, his family and the Scooter’s Coffee staff became aware of this child’s need in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, area and wanted to give back.

“Tobin’s family has a Facebook page called Tobin's Journey, devoted to getting the word out about Tobin's disease,” explains Tracy Eilers, Stan’s daughter-in-law. “I’m a mom myself, and it totally captured my heart.”

So, on Tuesday, September 3, Eilers’s three Scooter’s Coffee locations donated 100 percent of sales to Tobin’s fund. Collectively, the three stores raised almost $10,000.

The Eilers family and the Scooter’s Coffee staff have been brimming with emotion about Tobin’s plight and having the opportunity to help.

“They are some of the kindest people, and that’s one of the things that made it so rewarding for everyone to help,” Eilers says. “It also really shows that Scooter’s Coffee is more than just a coffee company. They are really involved in the community and genuinely want to make a difference.”
