Special Strong to Bring Special Needs Fitness Program to Dallas

June 09, 2021 // Franchising.com // DALLAS - Special Strong, a new program that helps those with disabilities through individualized and personalized strength training and social coaching, is opening in Dallas this June.

“For individuals with physical and mental disabilities, as well as those suffering from conditions like autism, cerebral palsy, Parkinson, multiple sclerosis, or muscular dystrophy, the impact of social isolation and physical limitations has made life especially difficult during the pandemic”, says Manju Nivsarkar, who owns the new Special Strong franchise.

“We teach strength training combined with science-based brain activity,” she explains. “Recent studies have shown that this type of training not only helps musculoskeletal development, but also improves circulation and increases levels of a special protein that help brain cells grow. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, is like miracle grow for the brain that has a terrific positive effect on the brain as well as emotions.”

Manju used to provide care for a child with special needs and saw positive changes in his behaviors and learning abilities, she says. “That was a turning point in my life.  I finished my Masters in ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) while working for the special needs population and have been doing so for more than 12 years now.”

Being into fitness and health, she saw that this was one of the key things missing while working with the special-needs population. “They tend to have a sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits. All the other therapies focus on speech and other areas, but not fitness or activities of daily living,” she says.

There has never been a better time for Special Strong in Dallas.

“It’s all about people,” says Manju. “Surprisingly there are not many community-based outlets out there teaching disabled persons in a step-by-step fashion how to help themselves: empowering themselves with the confidence they need, on all levels, to become better acclimated to the challenges of daily living.”

The program is fun for participants of all ages, she adds. “We offer one-on-one training and classes for kids, young adults, seniors and anyone with mental, physical, and/or cognitive disabilities. For older adults we offer specialized training customized for each participant.
