Veteran Takes Ownership of Valley Park Goodcents

August 03, 2022 // Franchising.com // ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Theo Vogt traded his gunner’s seat on an Abrams tank to become the new owner of the Valley Park Goodcents at 2961 Dougherty Ferry Road, Unit 110. He officially became the store’s new owner Aug. 1.

Vogt, a former Army sergeant who recently completed active duty, purchased the location from his former boss, Maggie Rothe, in an unexpected deal that was too good to pass up.

“It’s really unexpected and amazing,” he said. “I started here when I was 16 years old and now I get to return as a business owner. I’ve spent a lot of time getting to understand the business side of the operation, which is very different. But I am ready to tackle this new challenge.”

Vogt recently completed his active duty and was working temporarily as a prekindergarten teacher before he reconnected with Rothe. The two had stayed in touch after Vogt departed for the Army at 17. After he returned, he wanted to catch up with Rothe. When the pair met up, she almost immediately asked him if he wanted to buy the location, and he agreed.

As a teen, Vogt began working as a Goodcents crew member and left as a manager. “Maggie taught me so much, not just about business and learning that part, but about being a person and when to make sacrifices with your business to help people out. That’s why I decided to do this. It’s more than just being a business; it’s more about being part of the community.”

Rothe said Vogt’s transition from employee to owner was a natural progression following his military service and growth as a person. “I welcome all of my employees to come back,” Rothe said. “For Theo, it was like a homecoming. It’s great.”
