CEO Jeff Elgin Discusses State of the Franchise Industry on C:Suite Sit-Down

Elgin, an expert on the franchise industry, feels that franchising and other small businesses will be the cure for an ailing economy in 2009 by creating many new jobs. And, while a recent report issued by the International Franchise Association stated that 2009 will be a tough year for franchising, Elgin pointed out that franchise ownership provides another employment avenue for those who have been laid off.
For the right person, this can be a great time to open a franchise. "You just have to pick your spots carefully," Elgin said. "You want recession-resistant businesses, like hair care, restoration or senior care, markets that are growing rather dramatically."
With consumer spending and retail sales down and a wavering job market, Elgin agreed that it is tough out there – particularly for a small businessperson looking for financing. "But everyone understands that this [small business] is where jobs get created," he added, highlighting FranChoice's booming business.
