Authentic Churro maker offers Churro bites for Cinco Celebration
April 30, 2007 // Franchising.com // SAN RAFAEL, CA,- Churro Station, the fresh authentic churro maker and franchisor based in San Rafael is pleased to announce its Cinco de Mayo celebration and give-away on Saturday May 5th from 10a.m.-Noon at their 26 Medway location in San Rafael. Guests will be treated to a complimentary bag of churro bites, which typically sell for $1.75 and complimentary ICEES from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, May 5th.
"Cinco de Mayo is a very busy time for Churro Station, and this year it falls on a Saturday which will be great for the Latino families that often splurge on these tasty treats for their own Cinco de Mayo celebration," says Melanie Farkas, founder and owner of Churro Station in San Rafael and Marin resident. "We wanted to be part of the Cinco celebration by offering our free churro bites to thank our current fans and hopefully introduce new guests to our authentic and delicious churros for two hours on Cinco de Mayo."
They are light, crispy, dusted with cinnamon sugar and traditionally served with a cup of thick, rich hot chocolate. They have been a traditional breakfast and snack food for generations in Latin America and Spain and are becoming wildly popular among Americans who have tried them.
They are Churros—twisted ropes of fried dough about ¾ of an inch in diameter and 8 inches long. You might think you've tried one, but unless it was in Latin America or Spain, chances are it's not likely to be the real thing. "That's why I started this business," said Farkas.
"You just couldn't find fresh authentic churros in the U.S. Sometimes you find the frozen products at ball parks and fairs, but the taste is no comparison to the fresh authentic Churros."
Churros are the top seller at Churro Station, but rellenos—thicker, 10 inch long churros filled with cajeta (a traditional Mexican caramel filling), chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, pineapple or Nutella—are also popular. A bag of four churros or kid-friendly churro bites sell for $1.75. Rellenos are $1.25 each.
Most morning customers order their fresh churros with Mexican hot chocolate flavored with cinnamon.
In the afternoon, Guatemalan liquados are popular. The blended fruit drinks are similar but lighter than American smoothies. Churro Station also sells freshly made tostadas and sandwiches, and sells wholesale in addition to retail. Churro Station sells its staple product, the Churro, to a variety of schools, markets, amusement parks, movie theaters, caterers and restaurants.
There are currently 42 million Latinos in the U.S., representing $600 billion in buying power and Churro Station is tapping into this potential by offering its unique concept as a franchise. "There is a $4 billion Latino food and beverage market out there," says Farkas. "We're giving people a way to get in on that opportunity for a relatively small investment with a food that everybody loves and isn't widely available."
New locations opening this year in California include; Oakland, Santa Ana, Anaheim and a location in Phoenix, Arizona . Start-up costs are low, between $75,000 and $160,000. More information can be viewed at ww
