Best in Class Creating Bay Area Boom!

Supplemental education center signs third development deal with nine centers open in region

May 21, 2019 // Franchising.com // Bellevue, Wash. - Best in Class - a key player in the $7 billion tutoring industry - has become the Golden Gate to a better education in the Bay Area. The popular supplemental education center has signed a development deal for its second location in San Jose.

The business will be owned and operated by wife-and-husband team Kennis Fung and Siuyin Ngan, and will be located at 705 W Capitol Expressway, Suite 60. The opening date is still to be determined, but when it opens - it will be the 10th Best in Class in the Bay Area, with two others in development by different owners.

Originally from Hong Kong and now raising their eight-year-old daughter in San Jose, the couple came from a corporate background and took a chance by using their savings to buy their franchise.

“We were both from poor families and we understand education is the door to the future,” Fung said. “Therefore, we have a strong passion to help students learn and develop. We want to help students build confidence and achieve their personal best through education. Knowledge changes lives!”

Now the duo both hold bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering, with Fung earning a Master of Science in Materials Technology and Management, while Ngan has a Master of Science in Automation Systems and Management. Fung had been working as a project & operation manager and eventually became co-owner of an office furniture company. Ngan parlayed his degree into a career as a Senior Technical Engineer.

Best in Class Education Center was pioneered by CEO Hao Lam, who believes that education is the gift of a lifetime. After he fled Vietnam's communist government in the late 1980s, he worked tirelessly to put himself through school at the University of British Columbia. During that time, he tutored his classmates through complex coursework and difficult exams, sparking a lifelong passion for educating others.

“Hao is an awesome franchisor and leader who is full of energy and enthusiasm to support and lead franchisees in their personal and professional growth,” Ngan said. “He provides franchisees the opportunity to be successful. We’re very happy to part of the Best in Class family, and we’re very fortunate to be able to service San Jose and the surrounding areas.”

Best in Class opened its first center in 1995 in the heart of Bellevue, Washington and began franchising in 2011. Since then, the company has grown rapidly to 61 locations across 12 states.

“Both Kennis and Siuyin value education and understand giving the gift of knowledge,” Lam said. “The Bay Area has been very good to Best in Class. Like Siuyin and Kennis, I grew up very poor and had to seek out my education. Now that we can help others who yearn to learn, we gain so much just from giving.”
