Krystal Announces Eight Square Up Scholarship Recipients

Square Up Scholarship program awards $20,000 to Krystal employees across Southeast

June 10, 2019 // Franchising.com // ATLANTA - The Krystal Company has selected eight employees to receive $2,500 (renewable each year up to $10,000) in scholarship funds. Square Up Scholarship awards are $2,500 each and may be used toward four-year or two-year degrees, trade degrees or technical certifications from accredited learning institutions. Scholarship recipients demonstrate leadership, community involvement and a desire to advance their careers through education. The next application window will open in February 2020.

“We’re pleased to empower dedicated, deserving team members through this ongoing initiative,” said Paul Macaluso, Krystal president and CEO. “Our people are everything, and Square Up Scholarships are a way to support their dreams and aspirations.”

Winners include Elizabeth John, a shift leader in Jacksonville, Florida, Christopher Edwards, a crew member in Pascagoula, Mississippi and LaTondria Carter, the total rewards benefits manager at the Restaurant Support Center in Atlanta. Carter will use her Square Up Scholarship to earn her Professional Human Resources Certification from SHRM-ATL, an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management.

Krystal partners with Scholarship America to facilitate the application and selection processes to ensure consistency and fairness. Eligible employees must be enrolled in at least one class per semester, be in good standing and have a six-month employment tenure with the company. The Square Up Scholarship program was established in 2018 with a $500,000 contribution from Michael Klump, chairman of Krystal and CEO of Argonne Capital Group, parent company of Krystal. The program supports the educational pursuits and goals of individual Krystal employees, including both full- and part-time workers at company-owned and franchise restaurants. Recipients are selected through an application process that evaluates academic achievement, leadership, community involvement, brand tenure, unusual family and personal circumstances and financial need.
