Challenge the Pros: James Franks on brand standards and unit performance during ownership transitions and/or resales

How do you ensure continuity of brand standards and unit performance during ownership transitions and/or resales?

James Franks
Senior Vice President of Franchise Growth
WellBiz Brands

At WellBiz Brands, ensuring continuity of brand standards and unit performance during ownership transitions and resales starts long before a transaction ever takes place. The up-front conversations we have with our franchise partners encourage them to operate with the end in mind and to think about not just running their businesses for today, but what their life would look like if they needed to exit tomorrow. This mindset shift drives our franchisees to be better operators and leaders for their teams.

We also take a disciplined approach to buyer qualification. We don’t treat resales as “any buyer will do” but instead hold prospective buyers to the same qualification standards as new-unit franchisees. We evaluate financial capacity, operational experience, leadership capability, and alignment with our brand’s mission and values. By setting these standards, we ensure that incoming owners are positioned to operate at or above current performance levels rather than allowing quality to falter during a transition.

Every ownership transfer is supported by a transition plan designed to eliminate variance and create consistency across markets. This plan includes a comprehensive location assessment, a brand standards audit, systems and technology access, required training, a marketing reset where needed, and structured onboarding for both ownership and in-store team members. This ensures that regardless of the unit location or the incoming owner, the transition process reinforces our brand expectations and aligns with our operational standards.

The first 90 to 180 days post-transfer are especially critical. During this time, we closely monitor the location’s revenue trends, labor efficiency, guest satisfaction, and brand compliance. These key performance indicators help us identify early warning signs and intervene quickly to ensure performance remains high. We are proactive in our support of our franchise partners, so they understand they aren’t alone in the process. We’re always available to help and implement corrective actions when needed.

Ultimately, our goal is to treat resales with the same rigor and discipline as new unit growth. By combining strong up-front qualification, structured transition planning, and proactive performance management, we protect both brand integrity and unit-level economics. This approach ensures ownership transitions become an opportunity to reinforce standards and drive performance without becoming a risk to the system.
