PARSIPPANY, N.J., Oct. 12, 2011 // PRNewswire // -- The Internal Revenue Service has announced the election of Mark Steber, Chief Tax Officer of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc., as Chairman of the Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee (ETAAC) for the 2011-2012 session.
The ETAAC is authorized under the Federal Advisory Committee Act to make recommendations on a wide range of electronic tax administration issues. The Committee is charged with helping to convey to the IRS the public's perception of the electronic tax administrative activities, including sharing observations about current or proposed policies, programs and procedures. Each June, the Committee presents an annual report to the United States Congress on the IRS's progress with electronic tax administration.
"Over 100 million taxpayers take advantage of electronic filing for their tax returns and the IRS just crossed the 1 billion mark for electronically filed returns since the program started," Steber said. "With this growth comes the need for additional oversight and for consumers' perspectives to be represented. I am honored to serve as the ETAAC Chairman and to play my part in ensuring that electronic tax administration is working well for the taxpaying public."
The 15-person Committee represents various segments of the tax professional community and members are appointed by the United States Secretary of the Treasury to serve a single three-year term. Members include large and small organizations, state representatives and independent business men and women. Steber, a 25-year veteran of the tax industry, has served on the Committee since October 2009 and was elected by the members of the ETAAC to succeed Phillip Poirier as the Committee's Chairman.
"Jackson Hewitt has been at the forefront of electronic tax filing because we know this is a critical service that our clients request," said Phil Sanford, president and chief executive officer of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. "With his expertise and deep knowledge of the tax industry and its complex issues, Mark Steber is the ideal person to fulfill this role and help the Committee achieve its objectives over the next year. We congratulate Mark on his election as Committee Chairman."
As Chief Tax Officer with Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, Mark Steber is responsible for several key initiatives to support overall tax service delivery and quality assurance. In addition to his work with the ETAAC and IRS, Steber also serves as a Jackson Hewitt speaker on community financial literacy outreach and other tax matters. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Alabama Society of CPAs (ASCPA), the Georgia Society of CPA's and various other professional organizations.
