Local Entrepreneur is Inspired to Open Kumon Math and Reading Center after Daughter Experiences Success in the Program

Kumon Math and Reading Center of Flushing-North Now Taking Enrollments

March 05, 2018 // Franchising.com // FLUSHING, N.Y. - After working in the medical research industry for a few years, Shalini Outram decided to stay home to raise her kids until they were ready for school. During that time, she enrolled her preschool daughter in the Kumon Math and Reading Program. Little did she know, her daughter’s experience would inspire her to become a small business owner and open Kumon Math and Reading Center of Flushing-North.

“Seeing the immediate success that my daughter experienced in the Kumon Program really struck me,” said Outram, owner and instructor of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Flushing-North. “For two years, I watched my daughter continue to advance beyond her grade level, noticed how all of the children looked up to the instructor and observed just the overall culture of the Kumon Center and knew it was something I wanted to be part of. When I expressed interest in the business, the instructor really encouraged me to look into opening my own center.”

The Kumon Method empowers preschool to high school aged children to become self-learners and is designed to advance math and reading skills while fostering a love for learning. It goes beyond traditional tutoring by actively developing critical thinking skills as children progress independently through a carefully crafted curriculum.

There are 42 Kumon Math and Reading Centers in New York City, including 12 in the borough of Queens. Kumon Math and Reading Center of Flushing-North is part of Kumon’s 2018 expansion plan of welcoming 100 new franchisees nationwide.

“With New York City having one of the most competitive educational landscapes, it is apparent now, more than ever, that there is a high demand for supplemental education opportunities,” said Larry Lambert, vice president of franchise recruitment at Kumon North America. “We’ve seen a great deal of success meeting that demand and are committed to continuing to deliver the highest quality of education that parents want for their children.
