George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, Inc.® Announces Alliance with Senior Helpers® to Deliver Innovative Adult Care Services to Seniors

Leading Senior Care Provider to Staff One-of-a-Kind Adult Day Center Designed for Individuals with Alzheimer’s and Other Forms of Dementia

March 21, 2018 // Franchising.com // BALTIMORE - George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, Inc.®, a San Diego non-profit with over three decades of knowledge and expertise in offering dementia-related adult care centers, today announced a strategic alliance with Senior Helpers®, the nation’s premier provider of in-home senior care, to debut Town Square®, A George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Center, powered by Senior Helpers®. Town Square continues Glenner’s innovative approach to Alzheimer’s and dementia care by providing a unique, interactive adult day care experience and support services program for individuals and families impacted by the disease.

Town Square is an indoor, simulated urban environment that is designed to be attractive to all seniors, and uses reminiscence therapy to provide special benefits to those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia by surrounding them with tangible prompts from their past. Senior Helpers® will provide all caregiver staffing for the first-ever Town Square location in Chula Vista, California, as well as all future Town Square facilities. Senior Helpers will staff each of the Town Square facilities with Senior Gems® certified caregivers based on techniques, strategies and an overall approach to care developed by well-known dementia expert Teepa Snow, and Positive Approach® to Care, LLC, which is also endorsed by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Caregivers will be with all Town Square participants to guide them through state-of-the-art neighborhoods featuring vintage 1950s storefronts for interactions and activities designed to spark and engage their long-term memories.

“The goal of Town Square® is to heighten memory experiences and create an exciting, immersive and safe environment for seniors with dementia that also remains affordable and realistic for working class families,” said Scott Tarde, CEO and Executive Director of the George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, and Town Square® creator. “The experience leverages our rich history in Alzheimer’s and dementia respite care and support for family caregivers, but equally critical in making it successful is the personalized care we provide. Senior Helpers® signature Alzheimer’s and dementia care training program they provide for their staff makes them the perfect partner as we seek to provide families who are living with Alzheimer’s and dementia a better way to navigate life.”

Visitors to the highly structured, midcentury “town” will be cared for and guided by Senior Helpers caregivers throughout 14 distinctive vignettes that evoke the age when most participants (now in their 70s and 80s) were young adults, including a 1950s-era diner, pet store, movie theater, library, and museum arranged around a central green. Participants could be served hot lunch at an authentic 1950’s style diner at one turn, and then enjoy a vintage black-and-white film and old-fashioned popcorn, hairstyling at the on-site salon or tinkering with a 1959 Ford Thunderbird at another. The one-of-a-kind, interactive environment is designed to help capture part of the life and preserved cognitive function that remains intact for these individuals, ultimately enabling them to feel calm, confident and secure.

“We know all too well that the number of people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia continues to grow, and so do the challenges of caring for them,” said Peter Ross, CEO and co-founder of Senior Helpers®. “People want to stay home longer, and their adult children are looking for ways to extend their parents’ finances. Given the choice, having a care option like Glenner Town Square will help families honor this wish, particularly during the days when they’re at work or need a break.” Ross went on to say, “This experience is groundbreaking in its approach to ensuring a better quality of life for seniors and their families and leverages both Senior Helpers® memory care expertise and the core strengths and knowledge of our staff. We look forward to leveraging this partnership and using our franchise expertise to help bring the Glenner Town Square® powered by Senior Helpers® concept to families across the U.S.”

The first-ever Town Square® powered by Senior Helpers® will open in April 2018 in Chula Vista, CA, just south of San Diego. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday, from 8:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., with services ranging from $95 per full day to $65 per half day.
