Leading In-Home Senior Care Provider Partners with Dementia Care Connections to Offer Social Gatherings for Individuals Living with Memory Loss

October 26, 2018 // Franchising.com // ARLINGTON, VA - Senior Helpers® of Arlington-Alexandria, one of the nation’s premier providers of personalized in-home senior care, today announced it will host a monthly Memory Café in partnership with Dementia Care Connections. The Memory Café, a social gathering for individuals living with memory loss and their families, will be held on the first Friday of every month, beginning Friday, November 2. Participants and their families will interact with one another and take part in activities such as painting and games.

“At Senior Helpers, we see the toll illnesses like Alzheimer’s and dementia can have on caregivers and families, especially when it comes to socializing. We’ve partnered with Dementia Care Connections to create an opportunity for our participants, caregivers and families to build new friendships in a safe, interactive space,” said Bella Desai, Owner of Senior Helpers of Arlington-Alexandria. “Memory Cafés allow individuals living with memory loss, mild cognitive impairment or dementia to participate in a variety of structured activities to encourage cognition and reminiscing.”

There are currently 5.7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, which puts these seniors at a high risk of social isolation and the health problems associated with loneliness. Studies have shown that strong social networks are crucial to protecting cognitive function in people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Social gatherings at the newest monthly Memory Café hosted by Senior Helpers of Arlington-Alexandria are a great way to keep seniors with memory loss stimulated in a social setting, whether it’s with caregivers, family members or peers.

"Memory Café utilizes a variety of structured activities to promote social interaction, engagement cognition and reminiscing,” said Nicole McMonigle Knight, CDP and Owner of Dementia Care Connections. “This is a wonderful opportunity for loved ones and care partners to form new bonds of friendship in a safe, supportive and welcoming setting."

Founded in 2001, Senior Helpers operates with a vision to be the leading home care company in each community it serves. Its caregivers in Arlington are trained to offer the highest level of care possible based on the company’s Senior Gems® Alzheimer’s and Dementia care program. As the gold standard for excellence in personalized in-home senior care, the program was developed in conjunction with nationally recognized dementia care expert Teepa Snow, Positive Approach, LLC. Local residents will also benefit from the company’s Parkinson’s Care Program, a specialized training program for their caregivers created in conjunction with leading experts from the Parkinson’s Foundation’s Centers of Excellence network.

The Memory Café will be held on the first Friday of every month from 1 to 3 p.m. at 7910 Andrus Road, Suite 6 Alexandria, VA 22306.
