Zaxby's Announces Groundbreaking For A New Restaurant On MLK In Atlanta

SJAC Food Groups, LLC hosts ceremony at intersection of historic districts and schools

July 10, 2019 // Franchising.com // ATHENS, Ga. - Zaxby’s announces the groundbreaking of its newest Atlanta location at 946 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive at the corner of Newcastle Street. A fan favorite for chicken fingers, wings and salads, this Zaxby’s fast-casual restaurant will be built at the junction of four historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and four historic neighborhoods in southwest Atlanta.

“We’re pleased to support this community and provide job opportunities for local residents,” said SJAC Food Groups, LLC President and CEO Sterling Coleman. “I grew up in a neighborhood just like this one and am a proud graduate of an HBCU, so I feel a personal connection to the people here and the rich heritage and tradition of this area.”

Coleman has opened eight other Zaxby’s restaurants in Atlanta and owns the first Zaxby’s to reach the $4 million annual sales mark. The new Zaxby’s on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive is scheduled to open for business later this year.

The restaurant will be near Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine and Spelman College, all historically black schools. This location is at the heart of four historic neighborhoods – Ashview Heights, Washington Park, Vine City and Atlanta University Center.

To commemorate the new restaurant, the SJAC team will host a groundbreaking and dedication ceremony on July 11 at 10:45 a.m. Coleman and SJAC will contribute $50,000 to the Choice Neighborhood of Atlanta initiative over the next ten years.

“Congratulations to Sterling Coleman on the groundbreaking of his latest franchise,” said Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. “Small businesses have played a significant role in the history of Atlanta - from providing economic opportunities to communities cut out of the job market by segregation to serving as headquarters for civil rights groups advocating for needed change. This business on the Southwest side is another example that opportunity and upward mobility should have no boundaries.”

Coleman has been a Zaxby’s franchisee for over 16 years and has opened 17 restaurants in Georgia and Oklahoma, strategically focusing on stimulating economic growth and driving Zaxby’s national expansion.
