Tips for Finding Your Zen On the Go with Curio Collection by Hilton

August 14, 2019 // Franchising.com // As we hit the peak of summer travel season, we’re reminded that traveling can be stressful, particularly for those who find themselves in hotels more than their own homes.

Stress from business meetings or packed itineraries often leave travelers feeling the need to take a vacation after their trip. Humans are creatures of habit, and when forced out of our routines, we can be left feeling groggy, unorganized and anxious when we return home. It is proven that the better we feel, the more productive we are, thus, the trick to reducing travel stress and fatigue is to proactively practice self-care and maintain your well-being while away.

Many hotel brands already prioritize guests’ well-being during their visit - Curio Collection by Hilton, for example, offers travelers a number of self-care options at its hotels. Those looking to keep their daily routine while traveling can find familiarity through either a quick workout or switching it up with a new, unique class like the mermaid fitness class at Hotel del Coronado. For a little “me time,” travelers should treat themselves to a short session at one of Curio Collection’s top-notch spas - whether choosing to indulge in a eucalyptus steam bath at The Chrysalis Inn & Spa Bellingham or a soothing massage at Boulders Resort & Spa.

For travelers looking to prioritize their well-being and self-care during their next trip, Spa Director Shane Upson at The Diplomat Beach Resort Hollywood, provides some insight below on how to find your Zen while traveling and maintaining your self-care routine on the go.

How do you define wellness and well-being?

Wellness is a lifestyle approach to the balance and centering of the mind, body and spirit which is then supported through food, fitness, treatments and mindful meditation. Well-being is the constant state of being happy, healthy and balanced, so when we prioritize positive choices and proactive treatments, we are working to reach the highest state of well-being.

What is the role that wellness and self-care should assume in our daily lives?

For us to be the best version of ourselves, we need to practice self-care and self-love. When we factor wellness into our daily rituals, we often feel better and radiate positivity and happiness, and although nothing happens overnight, small lifestyle tweaks can lead to a more productive and healthier day, even for the busiest of travel schedules.

Begin by working wellness into convenient, sensible and accessible times in your schedule - after waking up, take a few minutes to use a mindful meditation app to focus before beginning your day, followed by a healthy, clean breakfast such as freshly-squeezed celery juice, fresh fruits or oats. Practice positive self-affirmations throughout the day and close with a short workout or yoga to release the day’s stress. When preparing to sleep, consider adding essential oils to your bath or shower, take long deep meditative breaths and focus on letting go of the day to start the next one new.

If swamped with a busy day, how can travelers still prioritize well-being and Zen during their day?

One of the most important things we can do when faced with a busy schedule is to check in with ourselves throughout the day. Simple tasks like meditating for a few moments between meetings or even ensuring that you’re drinking water during the day will keep you feeling like normal when traveling on business. If pressed for time, wake up 30 minutes before you typically would to take advantage of the hotel’s fitness center and get a quick workout in to wake your body up and start the day healthy and active.

Are there any items that travelers can easily bring along on their trip to help them find Zen?

In addition to taking advantage of on-site amenities, bringing the following items can help guests find or maintain their wellness while traveling:

  • Travel-size essential oils for relaxing, sleeping and bathing
  • Ear buds for meditation, soundscape or music
  • Crystals for centering and positive energy
  • Resistance bands for in-room/office fitness break
  • Facial masks to rejuvenate and hydrate at the end of the day
  • Sleep mask for deeper rest or meditation

How do you yourself maintain your well-being while you travel?

For me, it all depends on the type of trip that I am taking - the distance, length of stay, the reason for the trip and what space I have in my suitcase. I often sacrifice space in my suitcase because I always bring along therapeutic essential oils and an extensive self-care kit with multi-step skincare regimens, body care, cosmetics and hair care because when you look good, you feel good. I’m also vegan, so it can be very challenging to eat clean and healthy on my trips, but as a chef, I find that knowing a lot about the food I eat helps to customize meals while at restaurants. Thankfully, many hotels, especially within the Curio Collection portfolio, offer plant-based or vegan options at on-site restaurants for travelers looking to eat clean.

In what ways does The Diplomat specifically help travelers find their Zen while on a trip?

While visiting The Diplomat’s Spa + Wellness, travelers can maintain their Zen by taking advantage of our many on-site spa treatments. If feeling down or stressed, we offer a Holistic Healing Massage that removes negative energy using rose quartz crystals and a Holistic Hydration Facial, which our guests customize by choosing one of six gemstone crystal rollers to balance their energy.

Included in their stay, guests can choose between beach sunrise yoga or a spin class to energize their mind and body and stay active before or after their busy day. Because of the resort’s location, guests can close out a stressful schedule with a walk/run along our breathtaking sandy shoreline or meditate in our waterfall or ocean view relaxation spaces with breathtaking views of the crystal blue waters.
