UNITS Moving and Portable Storage Launches National Community Engagement Initiative

Moving and Portable Storage Leader Donates $5,000 to Wounded Warrior Project While Providing a Roadmap for Their Franchise Owners to do More

December 05, 2019 // Franchising.com // CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNITS® Moving and Portable Storage, a national moving and portable storage franchise headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, today launched a new initiative to encourage greater company relations with Wounded Warrior Project and other charities that help their local communities thrive.

CEO Michael McAlhany announced the new initiative today, with guidelines for franchise owners to work with three national charities at a local level. Along with Wounded Warriors, UNITS Moving and Portable Storage Owners have been provided engagement roadmaps to work with their local branches of Habitat for Humanity and Toys for Tots.

“We take community engagement seriously at UNITS Moving and Portable Storage. We didn’t just want to send our franchise owners a vague directive to go find charities to support. Instead, we worked with national organizations to learn best practices for our franchisees to reach out to their local chapters in order to develop the relationship,” McAlhany said.

The company began the vetting process in March of this year, with a focus on charities that helped veterans, children and people in need of housing. Starting with a preliminary list of nine charities, they identified eight criteria to measure the charities’ compatibility with the company’s mission.

“We looked at their records of financial responsibility and accountability, their core principles, their locations in relation to our franchise owners and their likelihood of needing our donated storage containers,” McAlhany continued. “We are very satisfied with Wounded Warrior Project, Habitat for Humanity and Toys for Tots as charities our franchise owners can engage with for years to come.”

UNITS Moving and Portable Storage kicked off the initiative this month with a $5,000 donation to Wounded Warrior Project at their franchise leadership conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Retired Lieutenant General, U.S. Army, Michael Linnington, accepted the check on behalf of Wounded Warrior Project.

“At Wounded Warrior Project, we believe that every warrior has a next mission. Our services in mental health, career counseling and long-term rehabilitative care are designed to help warriors on their path to achieving their highest ambition,” Linnington said. “This donation will help us transform the lives of warriors, ensuring they are empowered, engaged and employed in their community.

Local Franchise Owner Gets Head Start on Corporate Initiative

UNITS Moving and Portable Storage of Northern Virginia owner Eric Miller saw a need in his community last November. The local Toys for Tots had lost one of its major sponsors. Partnering with local firefighters, Miller donated more than 20 UNITS steel containers for storage at toy collection sites throughout the area. Once the containers were full, Miller and his team came and picked them up.

“They lost a major sponsor that not only provided a lot of money but served as their collection sites. We realized then that this was a great opportunity for us to help a terrific local charity. We are excited to partner with them again this year,” Miller said.

We’d love for you to tell this terrific story of corporate responsibility!

  • We are happy to offer leaders from UNITS Moving and Portable Storage, along with the three partner charities, to discuss the initiative and how local branches can participate
  • We can also put you in touch with franchise owners already engaging with one or more of UNITS’ preferred charities at a local level.
