Kumon Math and Reading Center of Cape Elizabeth Searches for Potential Buyer to Continue 30-Year Legacy

The After-School Enrichment Center has been a Community Staple for the Last 30 Years

August 04, 2020 // Franchising.com // Cape Elizabeth, Maine - Susan Ferris, local entrepreneur and small business owner, first opened the Kumon Math and Reading Center of Cape Elizabeth, on June 19th, 1990. It was one of the first Kumon Centers in America and has since become a staple in the local community, instilling a love for learning in thousands upon thousands of students in New England.

After three decades of devoting her life to the enrichment and academic advancement of children from pre-school to high school, Ferris is embarking on her well-deserved next chapter of retirement. If she is unable to find a buyer for her center, it will unfortunately have to close, not only leaving many families without high quality supplemental education, but also ending the legacy of one of the first Kumon Learning Centers in the country.

“Whether their children are studying above grade level or need a little extra help, I have a lot of families that truly rely on Kumon of Cape Elizabeth,” said Susan Ferris, who is both Instructor and owner. “I first opened the center because I wanted to provide a supplemental study option for my own children, but it quickly turned into much more than that for thousands of students over the years.”

Kumon is an after-school math and reading enrichment program that unlocks the potential of children, so they can achieve more on their own. As a comprehensive program, Kumon serves children in preschool through high school. The learning method uses an individualized approach that helps children develop a solid command of math and reading skills. Through daily practice and mastery of materials, students increase confidence, improve concentration, and develop better study skills. Kumon has over four million students enrolled in more than 25,000 learning centers in over 55 countries and regions. Learn more about the Kumon Method today.

“My hope is that an individual with a passion for education is able to step in to continue to help area children blossom into independent, confident self-learners,” said Ferris. “Kumon has helped me lead a successful career as an educator and as my own boss, all while paving the way for a brighter future for our youth.”
