Local Man Receives National Award and $15k Prize

Wayback Burgers and Boys & Girls Clubs of America Team up to Give Back on ‘Giving Tuesday’

December 01, 2020 // Franchising.com // CHESHIRE, Conn. - ‘Giving Tuesday’ (December 1) is a surprise day of receiving for an unassuming yet inspiring man from Tracy, California. Junior Cueva, Director of Operations for the Boys & Girls Club in the small town of Tracy, was chosen from more than 4,700 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide by Wayback Burgers as the recipient of this year’s “Wayback Gives Back Award.”

As a proud partner of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Wayback Burgers is not only giving 10 percent of all sales on “Giving Tuesday” to the national organization, they are also surprising one Club employee who has gone above and beyond for Club members during this incredibly challenging pandemic year. On December 1, Junior will be surprised at Boys & Girls Club in Tracy with a prize check of $15,000 for the Club, a catered Wayback Burgers lunch party, and free Wayback Burgers meals for a year! The members are so excited to help pull off this surprise!

Hometown Hero

When the Clubs shut down in March, Junior immediately stepped up and led the creation of a virtual program, which included coordinating technology donations and making home deliveries of computers, monitors and headphones to Club families. Through those home visits, he saw more unmet needs and spearheaded Drive-Up Club Giveaways every Friday. Junior coordinated the giveaway of backpacks, school supplies, masks, and sanitizers, and distributed more than 5,000 boxes of food. He also took on the tedious and exhausting task of preparing the Club to safely welcome kids back for the school year. They are now using the Club as a virtual learning classroom during the day for children who are in the most need.

“We embrace and support the mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of America all year long,” said Pat Conlin, President of Wayback Burgers. But the “Wayback Gives Back Award” allows us to recognize in a special way the difference one individual can make. While there are many wonderful and worthy Club employees, Junior stood out as someone who has made a tremendous impact on the lives of the families he serves in Tracy. When we heard his story and learned about his herculean and selfless efforts to stay connected to and serve at-risk kids during this pandemic, we knew he deserved this award.”

It will be an emotional and uplifting day as the Club kids surprise and celebrate one of their own!

Club Member to Club Mentor

Junior has been an inspiration to Club members even before the pandemic. He inspires them every day because he used to be one of them. Junior started going to the Tracy Club when he was 14 years old and on the wrong path. Once the Club came into his life, he had a home and a staff that never gave up on him. Junior started volunteering in the gym and became a referee. When he turned 18, he was hired as the Athletic Director. He moved up through the ranks to Unit Director and is now Director of Operations. Junior grew up in the Club, and now he is an amazing leader and mentor to his staff and the kids. Not only does Junior give everything he has to the Club, he is also the Varsity Basketball Coach for Tracy High School, where he has helped numerous student-athletes receive basketball scholarships, enabling them to go to college and pursue their dreams. He has done plenty of giving, and now it is time for him to receive!

“Junior will be ecstatic to have a donation made in his name to the Club that saved his life!” said Kelly Wilson, Area Director, Boys & Girls Clubs of Tracy. “The $15,000 award will enable us to continue the pandemic relief efforts our kids and families desperately need. Junior has changed the lives of so many kids, and they are going to be so thrilled to see Junior being recognized. They see what he did with his life, and they want to do the same thing.”
