Penn Station East Coast Subs Among Training Apex Awards Winners

Company recognized as No. 64 on list in 2022

May 04, 2022 // Franchising.com // MILFORD, OHIO - Penn Station East Coast Subs, the fast casual franchise known for its grilled, made-to-order sub sandwiches, hand-squeezed lemonade and fresh-cut fries, has been named a 2022 Training APEX Awards winner from Training magazine.

This is the sixth year in a row that Penn Station has made the list. The company moved up to its highest spot on the list yet at No. 64.

“We’re honored to be recognized by Training magazine alongside many Fortune 500 companies for the sixth year in a row,” said Lance Vaught, president of Penn Station East Coast Subs. “We are in great company among the other 94 winners. Our training program has been a commitment for Penn Station as a way to provide additional resources for our franchisees, and it has been especially beneficial during all of the challenges COVID-19 has thrown at the restaurant industry.”

The annual list ranks companies by excellence in employer-sponsored training and development programs. It is based on total training budget; percentage of payroll; number of training hours per employee program; goals, evaluation, measurement and workplace surveys; hours of training per employee annually; and detailed formal programs.

Penn Station has launched several new training initiatives in the last few years, including My Penn Path, a training and career path program designed to help employees move from entry-level crew member to crew leader, assistant manager and even general manager. Penn Station has also incorporated training videos, quizzes and modules into its proprietary POS system. Penn Station also recently launched the Penn Station Training Portal, which is a proprietary learning management system that will fully digitize all of the brand’s training assets.

About Penn Station East Coast Subs

Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1985 by Jeff Osterfeld, Penn Station serves an assortment of fresh-grilled and cold deli sandwiches, wraps and salads made to order with high-quality ingredients. The menu also includes fresh-cut fries, hand-squeezed lemonade made throughout the day and fresh-baked chocolate chunk cookies baked in the restaurant.

After graduating from Miami University, Osterfeld opened “Jeffrey’s Delicatessen” in 1983 at a mall in Dayton, Ohio. During a trip to Philadelphia to research the East Coast version of the sub sandwich, Osterfeld realized the popularity of that city’s famous cheesesteak sandwiches and began selling a similar version at his restaurant that quickly became a customer favorite. He opened the first Penn Station in Cincinnati in 1985 with four sandwiches on the menu, all prepared to order directly in front of the customer, along with fresh-cut French fries and hand-squeezed lemonade.

Penn Station has more than 310 locations in 15 states including Ohio, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Penn Station has been consistently included on the Training Magazine’s Top 100, Entrepreneur Franchise 500, Franchise Times Franchise 200+, Nation’s Restaurant News Top 200 and Restaurant Business/Technomic Top 500 Chain lists. Penn Station was also No. 24 on the 2021 Fast Casual Top 100 Mover & Shakers list.
