Is SEO dead? Building a modern search strategy for your brand

It’s not news that AI has rapidly changed how people are finding brands online. How we define a future-focused content strategy has changed drastically just within the last year. Being found in the age of AI now requires more than just creating content that ranks. As technology continues to evolve, your brand needs a strategy that’s both relevant today and adaptable for tomorrow. So, how can you make sure your brand’s search strategy is built for the future?
SEO isn’t dead. But search is getting bigger.
Although being found online is becoming more complex, the fundamentals haven’t disappeared. As search expands beyond traditional results, SEO is still important to your overall strategy. Many of the things you’re already doing, like using keywords and creating clear URLs, page titles and meta descriptions, are still relevant today. The key to success as you move forward is to enhance your content so that it’s also found by large language models (LLMs) as part of a larger, more comprehensive SEO/GEO strategy.
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. A generative engine is an AI-powered search tool that uses LLMs to provide search answers that are direct and conversational versus just giving a list of links. Examples of generative engines include ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot. You might also hear the terms answer engine optimization (AEO) and AI search optimization.
No matter what you call it, the goal is broader discoverability for your brand. Your SEO strategy needs to expand to include GEO, making sure your information is clear, accessible, and authoritative so that it can be cited as a source wherever prospects are asking questions.
Why does GEO matter for my brand?
No matter how strong your SEO strategy might be, you can’t optimize your way out of weak content in the age of GEO. In today’s world, AI-powered search tools are providing more ways for prospects to research franchise opportunities. A 2026 SEMrush survey of 622 B2B professionals revealed that 66% regularly used AI to research vendors and solutions, and 92% said AI shaped their vendor shortlist.
Content that is difficult to crawl or is unclear, thin, outdated or poorly structured means AI systems have less information to help them determine if your brand belongs in an answer. For example, someone researching QSR franchise opportunities might ask an LLM a question like “What are the top QSR franchises in Texas?” or prompt it to “Rank the best QSR franchises by cost.” A GEO-optimized web page will have important data like pricing, ROI, startup costs, steps to ownership and structured FAQs that an LLM can access to get this information back to the user. If your website doesn’t have the answers provided in an AI-friendly format, your brand won’t be included in the search results.
How can I make GEO part of my brand strategy?
The brands that will win in this new age of GEO will build for change instead of chasing it. Search will continue to evolve, but being found is only half the job. That means your brand will need to go beyond simply adding a GEO component to your current SEO strategy. When a prospective franchisee finds your website through an LLM search, you need to make sure they have a cohesive, connected brand experience.
Your brand’s SEO/GEO strategy should be just one part of a larger brand story that connects your franchise development messaging across platforms. All your points of contact need to work together to turn discovery into consideration, and consideration into qualified leads. An intentional content strategy that’s part of a strong brand story will make sure your brand stays discoverable no matter how fast the search landscape is changing.
