Checkers & Rally's Offers Multi-Unit Franchisees Quicker Development Time with Modular Building

Checkers & Rally's is a burger brand that has always stood out from the crowd. Their restaurants have been identifiable for decades now because of their signature black, white, and red diner-style decor. Now the brand is offering multi-unit franchisees an alternative to the traditional brick-and-mortar building. It’s a modular building design option that features all the signature Checkers and Rally’s look and feel but is engineered to cost less and open faster.

The Checkers & Rally’s brand is coming off its seventh year of consecutive same-store sales growth, has a strong industry leading return on investment, and was named a 2016 & 2017 Best Franchise Deal by QSR Magazine. The brand has grown to more than 870 locations across the U.S., and still offers top-tier market availability to multi-unit franchisees in 2018. In fact, the brand, known for its burgers, sandwiches, wings, fries and more, has been actively pursuing its growth goal of 1,200 restaurants by 2020.

“We still have room to grow in all major U.S. markets,” says Jennifer Durham, chief development officer at Checkers and Rally's.

Providing new and efficient ways for multi-unit franchisees to grow with the brand is part of the strategy and one of the reasons the modular design was created. Traditionally, the process of developing a new location can take up to 12 months, depending on the restaurant format selected. But the modular building is quicker to develop and the building cost starts at approximately $294,000.  The buildings offer flexibility and can fit in just under a half acre of space. The bottom line is half the cost, half the time.

The modular choice has been great for a number of Checkers & Rally’s multi-unit  franchisees, including Angelo Freites, who operates 15 Checkers locations in Florida.

“The main reason we decided to go with a modular restaurant was to eliminate time,” says Freites. “The modular building is fabricated in a very controlled factory which allows you the ability to drop the modular building onto the foundation thereby eliminating 30 to 60 days of stick building.”

Every new Checkers and Rally’s franchisee is assigned a real estate manager and a construction manager to help with site selection and build out. The brand continues the support well after opening by providing four weeks of personalized in-restaurant training as well as supplemental field comprehensive franchise training. The corporate field marketing team gives specialized support for six months surrounding the opening of each restaurant, and afterward, multi-unit franchisees have the ongoing support of a franchise business consultant.

The Checkers & Rally's brand is built for success, whether it’s in the traditional buildout process or the quicker starting and more affordable modular design.

“For over 30 years, we have focused on bold and flavorful food, amazing value for our guests, and restaurant profitability,” Durham says. “Our uniqueness only starts with iconic buildings. We differentiate ourselves by specializing on a successful drive-thru concept, catering to late night business, and executing a nimble, metrics-driven management style that improves restaurant profitability by developing efficiencies across the business.”

The brand’s modular design offering is a fast, affordable alternative for multi-unit franchisees looking to expand quickly.
