Denny's Corporation Celebrates Commitment to Step Up for Students Scholarship Program at Tampa School

Denny's Representatives Announce Hungry for Education National Scholarship Program

Tampa, FL (PRWEB) May 07, 2014 - Denny's Corporation representatives visited students at Florida College Academy this morning to deliver coupons for free Denny's breakfast – and some exciting news.

During the event, Denny's representatives presented a $100,000 pledge to the Step Up For Students Scholarship Program, which provides scholarships for low-income Florida students to attend a school of their parents' choice. This contribution will provide about 20 scholarships.

Step Up For Students is a nonprofit organization that administers the Florida Tax Scholarship program, and is helping nearly 60,000 low-income students attend a K-12 private school of their parents' choice, or use a transportation scholarship to attend an out-of-district public school this year.

April Kelly-Drummond, Denny's director of corporate diversity, also visited the school to promote the Spartanburg, S.C.-based company's Hungry For Education initiative, a scholarship program aimed at providing scholarships to qualified elementary through college-age students nationally. Through their commitment to Step Up For Students and other Hungry For Education partner charities, Denny's will contribute $200,000 in combined scholarships for students across the country.

"At Denny's, we are committed to providing the tools and resources students need to succeed in all educational endeavors, while still making a difference in the lives of others. Our Hungry For Education scholarship program allows us to help some of our younger guests access higher education and provides us the opportunity to continue to raise awareness of the issue of childhood hunger in the United States – a cause that Denny's is very passionate about and is helping to eradicate each and every day," said Kelly-Drummond. "Our support of Step Up For Students in Florida complements our nationwide efforts, and we are proud to be part of the program again this year."

Since joining Step Up For Students as a corporate partner in 2013, Denny's has pledged a total of $150,000, representing approximately 30 scholarships for low-income students.

"We are grateful for Denny's support of our mission, and that Denny's has an impressive mission of their own," said Step Up President Doug Tuthill. "We are proud to stand in support of education with Denny's, and wish them the best with their Hungry For Education program."

There are more than 2,500 Step Up scholars in Hillsborough County this school year, and about 50 students using scholarships at Florida College Academy.
