Roetzel Partner Edgar Asebey-Birkholm Serves as Panelist at Food Marketing Institute & BioFlorida Conferences

April 15, 2014 // Franchising.com // Roetzel & Andress LPA is pleased to announce that partner Edgar Asebey-Birkholm was recently a speaker and panelist at two industry conferences. Mr. Asebey addressed attendees on several important legal topics related to food safety and the global regulation of the life sciences industry.

On March 27 to 28, BioFlorida held its inaugural Latin America & Caribbean Life Sciences Conference at Florida International University. The conference brought life sciences professionals together and gave attendees the opportunity to explore business collaborations and share best practices with the goal of providing a platform for cross-border research, development and commercialization. Mr. Asebey served on the event’s organizing committee and as chair of the conference’s Regulatory Panel. Fellow panelists included Bernardo Luiz Moraes Moreira, PhD of ANVISA (Brazil), Seth J. Goldenberg, PhD of NAMSA and Ana Maria Saaibi, MS, CBA, of Biorep Technologies, Inc. who spoke on Colombia’s medical device regulatory process. The panel provided U.S. Medical device and biologics companies with insight on global product development strategies and regulation.

On March 31, 2014, Mr. Asebey served on a panel at the Food Marketing Institute’s (FMI) 2014 Legal Conference in New Orleans. He and his fellow panelists, Steven Steinborn of Hogan Lovells and Erik Lieberman of the Food Marketing Institute, spoke to conference attendees on the impact the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) is having on domestic and foreign food producers and marketers. Mr. Asebey advises FMI with regard to FSMA matters. Attendees at the conference included many general and regulatory counsel for some of the nation’s largest food retailers, including Giant Eagle, Inc., Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Edgar Asebey-Birkholm is partner and FDA Practice Group Manager at Roetzel & Andress LPA. Mr. Asebey’s practice focuses on foods, medical devices, OTC drugs, biologics, and cosmetics and he provides counsel to clients on compliance, registration, importation and enforcement matters related to FDA-regulated products. Mr. Asebey assists domestic and foreign clients in registration, clearance, and pre-market approval submissions to the FDA and advises clients on compliance issues associated with labeling and advertising, the manufacturing process, and other regulatory issues associated with the development, manufacture, marketing, and sale of FDA-regulated products. Mr. Asebey works extensively with foreign exporters and domestic importers on FDA-related international trade matters.

Mr. Asebey is a recognized authority on the recently passed Food Safety Modernization Act and has lectured in over 30 forums on FSMA’s impact on U.S. importers, non-U.S. food exporters and food companies. Mr. Asebey holds a degree in molecular biology from The University of Chicago and a law degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
