For years, franchise brands across industries leaned heavily on broad, top-of-funnel lead generation strategies to attract potential franchise candidates. Today, with the cost of investment rising, that approach is becoming less efficient across the franchise landscape because of a dwindling number of qualified prospects.
Franchisors need to connect with candidates in different ways to create a more targeted, one-to-one approach. Instead of casting a wide net, brands are investing in more focused outreach to very niche demographics, whether through curated data sets, localized advertising efforts, or in-market meetings designed to connect with qualified operators directly.
This shift is about attracting candidates who are more likely to convert to qualified leads because they understand the investment, the operational expectations, and the long-term opportunity. Below are three tactics that we help our clients execute to drive interest in this new era of franchise development.
Partnering with franchise research specialists can offer a franchisor a more targeted way to build lead pipelines by allowing brands to define specific criteria for ideal franchise candidates operating in the right territories, and then generating lists of proven groups and financially qualified individuals that match those parameters.
As list-buying tactics gain popularity, we’ve worked with clients to develop a 12-step communications strategy to help establish relationships with these leads. Using email, texting, and phone calls, each touchpoint serves as an opportunity to overcome the cold outreach that typically happens when contacting a prospect from a list.
This strategy also helps franchisors determine if the operator has the proper foundation of skills to support adding a new investment, a willingness or passion for bringing on a new concept, as well as any short or long-term hurdles that may extend their growth timelines. Once these leads move through the 12-step process, they are moved into a communication strategy that delivers relevant brand updates and timely insights, keeping the brand top of mind without overwhelming them as they consider their next franchise investment.
A natural next step after targeted list-buying is creating in-market opportunities for candidates and franchisors to connect directly in the areas where the brand is looking to grow. Hosting exclusive one-on-one meetings in growth markets can go a long way towards progressing the conversation with prospects that have expressed interest in the franchise opportunity.
Franchisors have several ways to approach these in-market meetings. If the brand already has an established franchise or corporate location nearby, prospects can be welcomed onsite for a tour and a behind-the-scenes look at the operation. Meeting with current franchisees can also be valuable, giving candidates a firsthand perspective on what ownership is really like.
If the brand does not yet have a local location, one-on-one meetings over coffee, fine-dining meals, or even a rented meeting space can create a more personal connection. Franchisors can also host small group meetings by renting space at a hotel, chamber of commerce, or similar venue that offers a private, professional setting.
Another smart approach is to focus on audiences already predisposed to business ownership, entrepreneurship, and investment opportunities. Partnering with business-focused publishing groups in your target growth markets that already reach these groups can be an efficient way to build awareness in targeted markets. This can include sponsored email campaigns, website banner placements, newsletter features, and other advertising opportunities that put your brand in front of an engaged audience. Many of these organizations also host gatherings for their members or networks, creating additional opportunities for franchisors to sponsor, attend, and connect directly with prospective operators in local markets.
As the franchise industry continues to evolve, a quality-over-quantity approach to development is becoming essential. Franchisors that focus on targeted outreach, thoughtful engagement, and the right channels will be better positioned to grow in a more competitive environment where the quality of qualified candidates is dwindling. While this may feel narrow and limited, it’s a refined approach that is tailored to your brand’s goals and the specific opportunity at hand.
