Jim Craig, the legendary goaltender behind the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team “Miracle on Ice,” took the stage on Day 2 of the MUFC. Speaking to a packed room, Craig captivated the audience with a powerful message about setting big goals, preparing relentlessly, and stepping up when the moment comes. He said those lessons apply as much to business as they did on the ice.
Best known for his key role leading the U.S. to a gold medal, including a stunning upset of the Soviet Union, Craig is now the owner and president of Gold Medal Strategies, a motivational speaking and leadership training company. In addressing the MUFC crowd, he weaved in stories of the dreams he had as a kid, the sacrifices he made to achieve them, and the teamwork and commitment it took to be part of one of the signature sporting events in U.S. history.
Craig shared his story of growing up in a large working-class family in Massachusetts and recounted the personal sacrifices they all made to help him achieve his hockey dreams of earning an athletic scholarship to college, making the Olympic team, and playing in the NHL. He accomplished all three, but the journey came with hardships and rejections.
He urged the audience to adopt a “winning underdog” mindset when facing obstacles, drawing on his own experience of competing behind an All-American goalie at Boston University and overcoming long odds to make the Olympic team.
Craig discussed his experience with the U.S. Olympic hockey team and how its coach, Herb Brooks, molded a raw collection of college-aged players into a team and pushed them to reach a level they may not have believed possible. The hard-charging coach was critical in preparing and motivating the team to not just compete, but to achieve the ultimate goal of winning the gold medal.
Craig cited a quote from Brooks: “The responsibility of a leader is to get their people from where they are to where they have not been.”
While many people associate the 1980 team’s underdog story with belief and teamwork, Craig also emphasized the importance of preparation and execution. He said the reason the team won the gold was an excellent game plan, and the players executed it successfully. Whether it is on the ice or in the business world, having goals and the proper motivation only work if the team accomplishes them effectively.
As he shared stories behind the team winning the gold medal in Lake Placid 46 years ago, Craig captured the attention of many in the audience who remembered the experience firsthand, relived it through this year’s Olympic hockey team, or watched Netflix’s recent documentary on the 1980 squad.
Craig concluded by telling the crowd, “Don’t ever let your memories be bigger than your dreams.”
