Bear Stearns Hires Wilfredo Ortiz to Cover Latin American Metals and Mining Sector

NEW YORK, New York — July 30, 2007 — Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. today announced that it has hired Wilfredo Ortiz as an equity research analyst in the Global Emerging Markets (GEM) Equity Research team. Mr. Ortiz will join Bear Stearns in August as a managing director to cover Latin American metals and mining companies. He will be based in New York and report to Rowe Michels, Director of Global Emerging Markets Research.

"Wilfredo has great insight into how Latin American metals and mining companies operate, he knows their business strategies and the industry dynamics that shape the sector," said Mr. Michels. "He's a wonderful addition to our GEM team and he's certain to be an asset to our clients."

Before being hired by Bear Stearns, Mr. Ortiz was a vice president in mergers and acquisitions at Atlas Strategic Advisors. Prior to that, he was at JP Morgan for eight years in a variety of roles including senior research analyst covering the metals, mining, steel and pulp and paper industries in Latin America. Mr. Ortiz has a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School and a B.S. in Engineering from the School of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Pennsylvania.
