November 09, 2007 // Franchising.com // NEW YORK, New York — The Bear Stearns Companies Inc. is pleased to announce today that it is the lead corporate sponsor of H.E.A.R.T. (Healing Emergency Aid Response Team) 9/11, a non-profit volunteer response team comprised of veteran police officers, fire fighters and construction workers, all of whom worked on the rescue and recovery after the September 11th attacks. They are also joined by family members of victims of the tragedy.
The primary mission of H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 is to aid in disaster relief efforts around the world by organizing teams of volunteer rescue and recovery workers to help affected areas. The inaugural project is set for December 2nd, when the group will be sending a team of fifty volunteers to assist in a Hurricane Katrina Relief Project. The team will help rebuild homes of people in need in St. Bernard's Parish, Louisiana, which is a heavily damaged area close to New Orleans.
"We learned a great deal working on the recovery effort following the events of September 11th and now we want to bring together our expertise to support the victims of other tragedies," said William E. Keegan, Jr., retired Lieutenant of the Port Authority Police Department and one of the founders of H.E.A.R.T. 9/11. "We are grateful to Bear Stearns for their support of our vision and look forward to a successful partnership."
"We are honored to support an organization with such an admirable purpose," said James E. Cayne, chairman and chief executive officer of Bear Stearns. "We were all affected by the events of September 11th and it is wonderful to see that the lessons learned from the recovery effort of one tragedy will be translated into helping others in need."
H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 was founded by Lieutenant Keegan, Lieutenants Owen McCaffery and John Moran of the New York Police Department, all first respondents on September 11th, and Tom Thees, a former Chief Operating Officer in the financial industry. The team's expertise is in developing policy, procedures and programs for hazardous materials, confined space rescue, mass fatality management, corporate asset recovery and terrorist intelligence assessment.
