'Tis The Season ... But Don't Let Holiday Lights Spark Danger Says Mister Sparky

SARASOTA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Holiday decorating can be frustrating, but when it is all done, the end result can be beautiful and lead to joyous memories. "There are certain decorations that individuals should be very cautious about. Holiday lights, in particular, can add a special sparkle to celebrations, but it's important that they don't spark danger. Following a few simple tips will make the holidays more enjoyable for residents and their families," Hunter said.

For example, Hunter encourages residents to look for labels that say "fire resistant" when purchasing artificial holiday trees. Hunter also suggests setting up trees away from radiators and fireplaces, which should have a screen to prevent sparks from igniting nearby flammable materials. In addition, don't burn wrapping papers and bows in the fireplace.

And for holiday lights, Hunter said to follow the guidelines below:

• It's critical to never use electric lights on metallic holiday trees. If the lights are defective, they can charge the tree with electricity, possibly resulting in severe injury or even electrocution.
• Be sure to choose decorative lights that have been tested for safety by a recognized testing laboratory. Doing so will show that the lights are in accordance with safety standards.
• Outdoor lights should be fastened tightly on trees, house walls or other sources used to hang them; this protects the lights from wind damage. Also, refrain from using nails or tacks to fasten the lights. Instead, secure with insulated staples or run the lights through hooks that can be purchased at your local hardware store.
• Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits that are protected by ground-fault circuit interrupters to protect against electric shock. The interrupters can be installed permanently to your house's circuits by a professional electrician.
• Turn off all holiday lights when you leave your home.
