• Pack efficiently: A good rule of thumb is to pack for a motorcycle trip like it's a three-day weekend, even though it'll likely be a trip of a lifetime. Conserve space by rolling up clothes instead of folding them and bring clothes that can be easily washed at each stop. For the true road warriors, everything needed for the night should just be stored in a rolled-up sleeping bag for easy retrieval and loading the next morning.
• Prepare for all elements: When traveling cross-country, riders will experience varying climates as they cruise through different geographic regions so carry warm- and cold-weather attire. By layering, clothes can be easily shed when venturing into warmer temperatures. Raingear is as important as leather gear, and line saddlebags with trash bags to keep everything inside dry.
• Plan ahead: Riders should know the weather better than a meteorologist by checking reports every day and checking out season averages to anticipate the day's ride. The trip's route should be mapped out well in advance and riders should bring a GPS, if possible.
• Expect the unexpected: Part of the allure of any motorcycle trip is not always knowing what's around the next bend, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. Every rider should have tools on hand in case of mechanical trouble, but for the sake of space, pack multi-use tools or use zip-ties to fasten them onto the handle bars. Since it helps in any situation, a rider's best companion is duct tape. Always carry things for an emergency like a first-aid kit, cellular phone, flashlight and spare keys, and always inform others of travel plans.
• Prep the bike: A rider doesn't want the trip to end before it begins, so the bike should be inspected for anything out of the ordinary, like leaks or engine noises. The tires should be filled with air and the bike washed clean. Additional equipment such as luggage racks, backrests or windshields should be installed in advance. Take a dry run with the bike packed to get the feel of it or to see if it's overloaded.
• Protect the body: Riders need to care for themselves just like their bikes. Items like sunglasses, gloves and riding boots should be worn at all times. Sunscreen and lip balm will defend against burns and chapping during the ride. To keep the trip going it's important to keep the body hydrated, so plenty of water in tow is essential.
