New Education Options for Parkinson’s Caregivers

SYNERGY HomeCare’s Family Learning Center Helps Family Members Adapt to Life as Caregivers

Gilbert, Ariz. (PRWEB) April 30, 2012 - When a loved one is diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), it becomes clear that Parkinson’s is a life-changing experience for the entire family — particularly for the primary care provider, who is most often a spouse, child or parent.

Family caregivers may not think of themselves as a care provider or recognize their new caregiving tasks. As family members begin helping with doctor visits, taking over financial responsibilities, or helping a loved one with grooming or eating, they are fulfilling their new role as a family caregiver. To help family caregivers provide the best care possible, SYNERGY HomeCare offers free on-line basic caregiver training. Family caregivers can access the Family Learning Center through the company’s award-winning website http://www.synergyhomecare.com/Learning.aspx.

Directions to access the Family Learning Center are as follows:
1. Select the button “Education for You and Your Family”
2. Select “Families” under “Family Caregivers”
3. Enter the public access username: synergyfamily
4. Enter the public access password: synergyfamilycare

A family caregiver is defined as someone who provides assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL), such as helping a loved one with getting in and out of beds and chairs, dressing, getting to and from the toilet, bathing, grooming, and feeding. Family caregivers also handle Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), such as providing transportation, house cleaning, grocery shopping, preparing meals, arranging for outside services, managing finances and giving medications. Family caregivers to people with Parkinson’s can benefit from understanding how this role affects their lives in the long term and how to ask for help. In addition to free on-line caregiver training, SYNERGY HomeCare provides free caregiving resourceson its website for Parkinson’s care providers to help them cope with their new role and responsibility.
