Company Offers Five Things Everyone Should Know about Mosquitos to Protect Themselves

Worth to get mosquito control during springtime when warmer weather and more rain create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitos. A mosquito free backyard makes for a fun spring and summer but is also an important safety measure. In 2012, North Texas was the hardest hit by West Nile virus. More than 1,800 people in Texas were infected with West Nile Virus and 89 people died.

MosquitoNix offers the following five things everyone should know about mosquitos to protect themselves:

5. Start mosquito control as early as springtime, when the weather reaches 50 degrees.

• While male mosquitos die in the fall, female mosquitos can survive the winter. They come out of hiding when temperatures start reaching 50 degrees and immediately look for blood to acquire protein needed to hatch their eggs. That’s why springtime is an important time to start mosquito control.

4. Eliminate everything that contains water on your property.

• Mosquitos lay their eggs in water. Mosquito larvae need water to grow to adult size. Make sure you keep your property dry. Turnover containers that hold water (bowls, pots, dishes, toys, etc...) and flush out birdbaths and puddles twice a week. Make sure your gutters aren’t accumulating water.

3. You may have already been infected with West Nile virus and not know it.

• According to the CDC, 80 percent of West Nile virus infections are asymptomatic. Most people who have symptoms experience a fever, a headache or rash. Fewer than one percent of infected people develop life threatening diseases.

2. West Nile Virus has cost the United States nearly $800 million in health expenses.

• Protecting yourself against mosquitos can pay off. According to a recentreport released by the CDC on February 10, 2014, West Nile virus has had a major impact on health expenses and productivity. In 2012, Texas recorded 1,868 cases of people infected with West Nile virus and 89 deaths.

1. Aerial spraying by local governments isn’t effective.

• Aerial spraying is a short-term response to a long-term problem. While aerial spraying will lower the number of mosquitoes for a week or so, it won’t disrupt the breeding cycle of the insects. A single female, in a lifetime of 3-4 weeks, will lay thousands of eggs. While adult mosquitoes will be killed by aerial pesticides, the eggs they’ve laid will soon hatch. In 7-10 days, the mosquito larva will become flying, biting adults. And while some municipalities will conduct aerial larviciding over marshes and swamps, they usually aren’t done in residential neighborhoods.

Dallas County Health and Human Services said earlier this year that it is expecting an increase in reports of West Nile virus cases this year because it has changed the rules for diagnosing the disease. Last year, if you didn’t have a medically documented fever, but tested positive for West Nile virus, it wasn’t counted. This year it is. The increase in number of cases may increase the call for more spraying.
