MosquitoNix® Offers Safety Tips to Mark National Mosquito Control Awareness Week 2014

The goal of Mosquito Week is to educate the general public about the world’s deadliest animal and the life threatening diseases it carries such as West Nile virus.

On April 24, 2014, Dallas Health officials confirmed that a mosquito tested positive for West Nile virus. In 2012, North Texas was the hardest hit by West Nile virus. More than 1,800 people in Texas were infected with West Nile Virus and 89 people died.

MosquitoNix offers the following tips to protect against mosquitos:

• Eliminate everything that contains water on your property.
  Mosquitos lay their eggs in any place that can hold water, like fish ponds, bird baths, old tires, tin cans, lingering puddles of rain, guttering, catch basins, tree cavities and more. Make sure you keep your property dry. Turnover containers that hold water (bowls, pots, dishes, toys, etc...) and flush out birdbaths and puddles twice a week. Make sure your gutters aren’t accumulating water.
• Take charge of your safety.
  Aerial spraying by local governments is a short-term response to a long-term problem. While aerial spraying will lower the number of mosquitoes for a week or so, it won’t disrupt the breeding cycle of the insects. A single female, in a lifetime of 3-4 weeks, will lay thousands of eggs. While adult mosquitoes will be killed by aerial pesticides, the eggs they’ve laid will soon hatch. In 7-10 days, the mosquito larva will become flying, biting adults. And while some municipalities will conduct aerial larviciding over marshes and swamps, they usually aren’t done in residential neighborhoods.
• Implement mosquito control on a consistent basis to disrupt the breeding cycle.
  Mosquito and insect control products come in many shapes, sizes and forms. There are lotions, gels, pump sprays, candles, yard bombs, propane devices, and more – to repel bugs. But most do not disrupt the mosquito breeding cycle. Only a consistent attack, like a misting system or monthly spraying can disrupt the breeding cycle and eliminate dangerous bugs.

A total of 2,374 cases of West Nile virus disease in people, including 114 deaths, have been reported to the CDC for 2013.
