MEMPHIS, TENN. (PRWEB) September 23, 2015 - With Autumn officially here, TruGreen is offering important fall lawn care tips to help Americans set the stage for a thick beautiful lawn next spring and summer. In a short video, TruGreen Spokesperson Jason Cameron hosts a fun pop quiz to test viewers’ fall lawn maintenance knowledge and offer advice for getting grass and shrubs in top shape in the coming weeks.

Many Americans believe they are pretty savvy when it comes to their lawns, at least according to a recent TruGreen national survey which found that seven in 10 Americans believe they are knowledgeable about the health of their yards. Unfortunately, even conscientious yard owners overlook the critical role fall lawn maintenance plays in the overall health of a lawn. For many regions in the U.S. this means preparing for the cooler temperatures of winter and creating a solid foundation to come back strong in the spring. TruGreen’s team of experts are on hand to help ensure the best lawn come spring.

According to TruGreen’s team of a PhD-certified agronomists, the following tips will ensure lawn lovers around the country protect and foster a healthy lawn this fall.

• Aerating – Aeration can have a dramatic impact on your lawn’s success, promoting root health and producing healthier grass. By perforating the soil, aeration relieves compact soil and built up grass, and increases the flow of air, water and nutrients. In many parts of the country, fall is the perfect time to perform this essential lawn maintenance.
• Overseeding – Often done hand in hand with aeration, overseeding promotes healthy, thick lawns, and can be essential to discouraging any future weeds. Late summer and early fall is often the best time to overseed lawns as it gives the grass the maximum time to develop a deep extensive root system and mature before the onset of summer stresses next year
• Watering - Although it's true that temperatures start getting a bit lower in the fall (depending on where you live) and grass growth slows a bit, water helps it to sustain growth throughout. Be sure to avoid overwatering, though; more than one inch or one to two hours of irrigation up to once or twice a week may cause excessive top growth. Other factors, such as soil conditions and weather can help you determine how often you should water.
• Mowing - Mowing is of course an essential part of lawn maintenance during fall, just as with any other time of year. It not only keeps everything looking neat and manicured, but it also helps keep your lawn healthy and free of weeds and lawn damaging insects. As a general rule, never mow more than one-third off the grass height. This keeps your lawn evenly trimmed and at the same height all year long.
• Raking and Dethatching - Raking and removing the thick, accumulated layer of plant debris regularly can be extremely helpful, especially early in the fall. This will allow your lawn to breathe, and removes excess organic debris that could restrict water and airflow. Be careful not to rake too harshly, to avoid removing healthy parts of your lawn along with the thatch.
