Zabka Is The First Company In Poland With Scientifically Approved Decarbonization Goals

December 16, 2021 // Franchising.com // POLAND - Zabka Polska is the first company in Poland and the first food network in the Central and Eastern Europe region, whose decarbonization goals, included in its ESG strategy, were scientifically verified and approved by the international initiative called Science Based Targets (SBTi). The company thus proves that the path it has taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the commitments it has made jointly constitute a viable plan.

Combating climate change is a global challenge and a huge responsibility test for the company. Zabka is actively working to reduce its negative environmental impact. As a sustainable company, it addresses this challenge comprehensively by working to reduce energy consumption, looking for low- and zero-carbon sources, testing innovative green technologies and encouraging consumers to make planet-friendly choices. Among the goals that Zabka has declared in the new Corporate Responsibility Strategy announced this year is the achievement by 2025 of climate neutrality, in terms of GHG emissions in the range 1 and 2, and emission intensity reduction in the range 3, in line with the objectives of the Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative, which the company joined in 2021.

In December this year the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets declared by Zabka have been officially approved by the SBTi Target Validation Team. The climate targets set by Zabka, according to the SBTi assessment, are accordant with the most ambitious provision of the Paris Agreement, whose goal is to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era.

The goals scientifically approved and verified by SBTi assume that Zabka will reduce by 25% total greenhouse gas emissions in the range 1 and 2 by 2026 compared to base year 2020 and will reduce by 70%. the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions in stores by 2026 (range 3, tCO2/PLN1m) for the same time frame. In addition, by the end of 2026, the chain will involve business partners responsible for 75% of the purchasing expenditure in products and services area in the process of setting the scientifically confirmed reduction targets.

The Science Based Targets (SBTi) initiative is a collaboration between the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and CDP, the world's most famous climate data disclosure company. It aims to promote the setting of carbon footprint reduction targets based on scientific knowledge. SBTi members aim to limit global warming to well below 2°C compared to the pre-industrial era and continue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
