February 27, 2025 // Franchising.com // Tempe, Ariz. – SYNERGY® HomeCare has announced its newest location based in the San Francisco Bay Area, SYNERGY Homecare of South San Jose.
The company is owned and operated by Dr. Mercy Egbujor and her husband Michael Egbujor. Dr. Mercy has spent over thirty years providing care in settings ranging from hospitals to homeless camps, leading her to appear in some of the Bay Area’s most prominent media outlets, such as Mercury News and the San Jose State University Journal. Michael was also a prominent figure in his past career, where he spent over 30 years in an executive management role at a San Jose bank.
Headquartered at 841 Blossom Hill Road, Suite 108 in San Jose, the company assists residents throughout South San Jose, including the communities of Almaden, Blossom Valley, Evergreen, Santa Teresa, Silver Creek, Willow Glen, and the Villages. The company provides a wide variety of non-medical, in-home care services, from companion care to personal care and respite care.
Dr. Mercy has had her finger on the pulse of San Jose’s care needs for the past three decades and is well aware of the growing need for these services, particularly among Baby Boomers. U.S. Census statistics show that 10,000 Baby Boomers are turning 65 every day and that by 2030, there will be more than 70 million people over 65. According to the AARP, over 80% of this demographic reports wanting to remain in their own homes for as long as possible.
Throughout her healthcare career, Dr. Mercy has worn many hats. She first started her caregiving journey as a certified nursing assistant, working in Santa Clara Valley’s health and hospital systems. She eventually became a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a family nurse practitioner, where she spent 22 years working as the primary care provider for many Valley residents. As she progressed through her career, she continued to look for more ways she could give back to her community, which led her to start spending her time caring for the local homeless population. Her work has earned her the light-hearted nicknames “the Creek Doctor” and “Mama Bear” because of the countless hours she’s spent providing care in parks, homeless encampments, railroad tracks, and anywhere else her patients brought her.
After a long 35-year career in nursing, Dr. Mercy finally retired from the Valley’s healthcare system in 2024. Now, only months later, she’s already rejoined the caregiving profession as the owner of SYNERGY HomeCare of South San Jose.
“Anyone who knows me knows that my passion is taking care of others,” said Dr. Mercy. “That passion has guided me throughout my entire life. From my home village in Nigeria, to the bedsides of Santa Clara Valley Clinics, to the creeks of downtown San Jose, I’m always comfortable as long as I’m in a position to help others.”
Michael’s thirty years of experience in finance and executive management will serve to complement Dr. Mercy’s natural empathy. He has familiarity with handling human resources, accounting, and discretely managing client health and financial information.
“After I retired from my previous career, I knew I wanted to do good while working alongside my wife,” said Michael. “As principal and chief operating officer of our company, I want to fully dedicate myself to handling all of the behind-the-scenes operations, so that Mercy can focus on doing what she does best: looking after others.”
According to the most recent U.S. Census report, over 20% of Santa Clara County is between the ages of 60 and 80. With much of the area’s workforce also being comprised of younger employees who spend long hours at some of the world’s biggest tech giants, many of these older residents don’t have a support network when it comes to receiving assistance with things like cooking, shopping, running errands, doing light housekeeping or going for walks. Some even struggle to find help with personal care, such as help with bathing, dressing or using the toilet.
“I believe every human being has the right to dignity, independence, and respect, and I don’t believe that aging changes that,” said Dr. Mercy. “There is no limit to what I won’t do to help someone maintain those rights and be comfortable while they face whatever challenges that life throws their way.”
