Bruster’s Real Ice Cream has a well-known reputation for fresh, premium, home-style ice cream and for being a gathering place and cornerstone of many local communities. Places like Fishers, Indiana, where husband-and-wife team Ben and Tiffany Schlueter opened their first Bruster’s location in the spring of 2022.
“We had always wanted to own our own shop of some sort in Fishers,” said Tiffany. “Something that brought joy to the area, was family-friendly, and would allow us to give back to the community.”
Bruster’s Real Ice Cream was an easy choice for Tiffany because she grew up in the brand’s hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ben, who has a background as a financial advisor, took the more logical approach and did all the research. He liked what he saw with Bruster's, from their franchisee support, and royalty fees, to their delicious premium products and branding.
“Once all our concerns were addressed and we considered a bunch of other variables like location, funding the build, and finding the right employees, it came down to prayer and a gut feeling for us,” said Ben. “It felt right. We clicked with the people at corporate and felt like they had our best interests at heart too.”
Tiffany said the brand was there with support from the beginning. “I had a binder with a play-by-play to get our store built and opened. It was such a comfort to me to flip through the pages and check things off as I accomplished them. Of course, if I had any questions I could always reach the appropriate person fairly quickly and keep chugging along. They knew this was our first time doing anything like this and corporate walked with us the whole way.”
Almost a year into operating their first location, Tiffany said becoming a Bruster’s franchisee has been a great journey that has been just like she expected. “I love making the products and serving the customers. Overall, it's about making people happy and I think we're doing that!” she said.
Tiffany said they’ve met some really great people through the journey, including other franchisees, trainers, and “the folks at corporate feel like friends.” She continued, “It really just feels good being able to provide people with delicious ice cream and celebrate life! Plus, I have really come to love working with my teenage scoopers. They have surprised me with their friendliness and compassion towards each other. We laugh a lot while we work and that really makes us happy.”
Their Bruster’s location is on a stretch of road surrounded by schools and churches. “There’s lots of families, sports, and clubs to support!” said Tiffany.
When asked about opening another location, Tiffany said, “I would do it again! I've learned so much in the past year.” That’s just what the Schlueters are considering. “We would love to have one or two more stores,” said Ben.
