Boston Pizza joins City of Edmonton's recycling pilot project for business

EDMONTON - July 18, 2007 - Boston Pizza has joined a pilot project with the City of Edmonton which may pave the way for a possible recycling program for businesses. Boston Pizza is the first restaurant chain to participate in the pilot project.

The Boston Pizza restaurants at 4804 Calgary Trail and 10115 Princess Elizabeth Avenue are the first two locations to participate in the project, which launched July 9.

"Our staff encouraged management to find a way for Boston Pizza restaurants to go green," says Kelly McClung, business manager, Boston Pizza Regional Office. "We approached many waste management companies to assist us with our recycling efforts, but none of them had the infrastructure in place to handle the capacity. We then approached the city's waste management branch and are now involved in the pilot project."

The City of Edmonton provides a weekly pick-up of recyclables including paper, plastics, metal cans and glass bottles.

"Boston Pizza's participation in this pilot project demonstrates their role as good corporate citizens by reducing the amount of garbage to landfill though recycling," says Leo Girard, director of collection services for the City of Edmonton. "Based on the results of the pilot project, the city will be evaluating the feasibility of expanding the service to other interested businesses down the road."

"Our staff is fully committed to the recycling program and are excited to be part of the pilot project," continues McClung. "Before this program launched, franchisees and managers were collecting the recyclables and taking them directly to the depot or their homes to be recycled."
