A 'Silent Killer' Could Be Lurking in Your Home

Tips to Protect Against Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

October 26, 2007 // Franchising.com // WACO, Texas – Snuggling up under a blanket in front of a cozy fire is a picturesque way to spend the winter months. You might just enjoy having the heater on and drinking a cup of hot chocolate. However, if you use gas-fueled burning equipment, or don't have proper ventilation for your chimney, carbon monoxide could secretly be leaking into your home.
Known as the silent killer, carbon monoxide kills more Americans each year than any other type of poison. It also sends several thousand people to emergency rooms with carbon monoxide poisoning.
"It is impossible to see, taste or smell the toxic gas, so carbon monoxide can accumulate in your house without you ever knowing," said Doyle James, president of Aire Serv Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. "It's usually caused by poor installation or maintenance of fuel-burning appliances. Inadequate ventilation for the gas to escape makes carbon monoxide very dangerous."

To keep you warm and safe this winter season, follow these suggestions by Aire Serv:

*Install a carbon monoxide detector

*Don't use a stove or fireplace that is not vented

*Never heat your house with a gas oven or range

*Don't warm your car up or keep it running inside a garage, even with the garage door open

*Have a trained service technician annually inspect your heating system, including chimney and vents

*During the rest of the year, be on the lookout for these warning signs that carbon monoxide is accumulating in your home:

*Gas flames that usually burn blue are burning orange or yellow instead

*Appliances have sooty stains on them

*Fires become difficult to light — the chimney may be blocked

*You develop these symptoms — headaches, dizziness, disorientation, nausea and fatigue
