Beware of the Glare Windshield Damage Magnifies Fall Sunlight, Can Cause Accidents

October 31, 2007 // Franchising.com // WACO, Texas – Windshield cracks, chips or pitting can magnify sunlight, especially during fall rush hours when the sun is rising or setting at a lower angle in the sky. Unexpected intense direct rays can temporarily blind drivers, increasing the risk of serious accidents.

"Most insurance companies will authorize to replace windshields with significant sandblasting damage, rock pits or chips in the driver's line of sight because it is such a hazard," said Mark Dawson, president of Glass Doctor. "The windshield does not have to be completely cracked to be an accident risk."

Fall is a perfect time for drivers to inspect their windshields for damage so that they can be repaired or replaced before winter storms arrive. According to the National Glass Association (NGA) 5.1 percent of windshields are damaged and require replacement each year. With people keeping their vehicles longer than ever, the chances that a vehicle will need a windshield replacement are good.

Even if the windshield is not damaged, drivers can protect themselves from glare by using a windshield treatment, such as Aquapel® by PPG. The windshield treatment bonds with the glass to create an invisible film that reduces glare while repelling water. Automotive safety experts rank the windshield as the third most important safety component in today's cars and trucks, according to the Car Care Council. Seatbelts and airbags rank first and second. All three components are part of what automotive engineers refer to as a vehicle's safety restraint system (SRS).
