Local Entrepreneurs Fund Student Literacy Center
January 14, 2008 // Franchising.com // GARLAND, Texas – Glass Doctor of North Texas and Herb's Paint & Body Shops are teaming up to fund classroom materials for a third grade literacy center at Northlake Elementary School in Richardson ISD through a project listed on DonorsChoose.org.
"Our Glass Doctor team was looking for ways to give back to the community during the holidays, and we saw this proposal on DonorsChoose.org," said Larry Patterson of Glass Doctor of North Texas, whose children attend Richardson ISD schools. "We donated $200 towards the project, and Alan Walne of Herb's Paint & Body was willing to step up and fund the remaining amount."
More than 75 percent of the students at Northlake Elementary come from low socio-economic homes. Many of the students are learning English as a second language and need literacy help. One of their teachers posted a request on DonorsChoose.org for an estimated $487 to buy a listening center, partnering books, reading comprehension games and fluency activities for the students.
DonorsChoose.org is a simple way to provide students in need with resources that our public schools often lack. At this not-for-profit web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals, whom are called Citizen Philanthropists, choose projects to fund. Donors have contributed $17,035,930 to 871,373 students through DonorsChoose.org since its inception in 2000.
