RadioShack Adds Two New Models to its GE Digital Camera Lineup

New features such as smile and blink detection offer great solutions for portraits, group photos and for people who post images to the Internet and social sharing Web sites

February 06, 2008 // Franchising.com // TORRANCE, Calif., & FORT WORTH, Texas--General Imaging, the worldwide exclusive licensee for GE-branded digital cameras, and RadioShack Corporation (NYSE: RSH) today announced the consumer electronics retailer will add two new models to its GE lineup.

RadioShack says it will begin carrying the two new models in some neighborhood stores by February and system wide by March.

"We are extremely pleased with the success of GE-branded cameras, and we're delighted to expand our product selection of a brand that resonates so well with our customer base," said Doug Lane, merchandising vice president - RadioShack Corporation. "GE delivers a quality product along with an affordable price and stylish design, offering great solutions to our customers' digital imaging needs. Also, new features such as smile and blink detection are ideal for people who take lots of individual or group pictures, such as families or people who post images to the Internet and social sharing Web sites."

The A735 is GE's new entry-level model, retailing for under $100. It offers 7 megapixels of resolution, 3x optical zoom, and a 2.5-inch LCD screen. RadioShack will offer the A735 in both black and red. The E840s (MSRP under $200), features 8 megapixels, 4x zoom, and a 2.7-inch LCD. It will be available in black. Both are new for 2008.

The new models join the GE E850 ($150), a wide-angle compact with 8 megapixels, 5x zoom and 3-inch LCD, which RadioShack began carrying in June.

The A735 and E840s are among the first cameras on the market to include blink detection and smile detection, ensuring that the user captures just the right moment when taking shots of people. After a shot is taken, the blink detection feature alerts the user if the subject's eyes were closed and allows another attempt. The smile detection feature, when engaged, works by tripping the shutter automatically when the subject smiles.

The new models also have all the same great features seen on the popular E850, including face detection (maximizes focus and exposure on human faces), image stabilization, red-eye removal, ISO 1600 sensitivity, and panorama stitching, a software feature built into the camera that allows the photographer to take up to three shots of a wide vista and "stitch" them together as a single image.

All the GE digital cameras will also be available on the Web at www.RadioShack.com as well as through the company's Ship-to-Store and Direct-to-U programs.

Hiroshi "Hugh" Komiya, Chairman & CEO of General Imaging, said he looks forward to a long relationship with RadioShack. "RadioShack was one of the first retailers to stock our cameras, and we are delighted that this important leader in consumer electronics has chosen to carry more of our products," he said.

Rene Buhay, General Imaging's Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for the Americas, said he was excited to see the relationship with RadioShack grow. "RadioShack has helped increase our visibility throughout the country and given us access to consumers accustomed to seeing the very latest in electronics in their stores," he said. "RadioShack customers will now have even more choices."
